Purpose/ Benefits of NAAAV and the Indigenous Women’s Conference
The mission of NAAAV is to develop and implement strategies to empower Native Americans whose lives have been affected by violence. To provide culturally sensitive materials and resources to Native and non-native communities on domestic, sexual, and/of community violence and to assist and improve services to Native Americans who have been affected by domestic, sexual, and .or community violence are just a couple of the goals of the work of NAAAV.
The purpose of this conference is to provide a safe. Supportive environment for Native Women to come together to exchange ideas and concerns, gather information, build skill and mutually support one another. It is also a time to reflect and renew oneself during a hectic Pow Wow season.
It is the philosophy of NAAAV that issues like addiction/substance abuse, personal finance management, self advocacy and micro-enterprise must be explored in order to work towards ending violence against Native Women in Virginia. NAAAV recognizes the complexities of the issues of domestic and sexual violence and believes that only by honoring and exploring all of the facets of violence against Native Women, from economic abuse to substance abuse, can a framework be developed for ending that violence.
For the fifth time, through the Indigenous Women’s Conference, Native Women are able to come together to work towards this common purpose. And, it is through participation in NAAAV, that Native Americans and non-native allies come together all year round to work towards the common purposes of creating safety and the elimination of violence against Native Women.
The conference is limited to twenty participants with priority given to Native Women due to limited space. For more information contact: Melissa Roberson via email at [email protected] or (804)692-0592.
