  • Habitat for Humanity came through!!

My daughter got picked for the new Habitat for Humanity home that they're building in town. She is so excited and I am so proud of her. She's had to put up with a lot to qualify, and go through a process to get selected.

This week she gets to select her floorplan (4 bedroom) and her type of heating (???). Groundbreaking is within a week!

We checked out her lot which is kinda small (ok) and has an established lawn and mature trees (lucky!!).

Now with some sweat equity and lots of volunteers, she should be in her new home by Thanksgiving!

Anyone else here get involved with Habitat for Humanity???

Not to brag, my middle daughter worked alongside former President Jimmy Carter in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico on a HFH project, through Girl Scouts.

        Congratulations to your daughter!

One of the companies I used to work for had a Habitat team - we'd work on a couple of houses every year, and it was wonderful seeing families realize their dream of having a place of their own.

          Thanks, RD!!

AK - that's cool. I know they told my daughter to be ready for photo ops with "celebrity" volunteers.

That's awesome! I work my tribe's housing authority, and we have a long waiting list, so it's always great to hear people taking advantage of the opportunities such as this. I'm sure she went through a long process, and is very deserving. Congratulations!

Great for her! Is her home being built on the rez? I was just wondering if they could help out other reservations as well, like mine. thanks

Our county's Habitat for Humanity HAS built 4 houses on the reservation - 2 here at Fort Washakie and 2 at Arapahoe since their startup 12 years ago.

My daughter's house will be off the reservation "in town". This is their 14th house, and they already had a lot and everything in the works. We do own land here on the rez and we could have maybe put it out here, but getting the water/septic/electric/natural gas takes an "ACT of GOD".

Paying city property taxes and following city regulations will be a new thing, but luckily after the first year they take part of her monthly payment and apply it towards the taxes.

It sounds like the local Habitat for Humanity director spends all year raising money towards the construction ($100K+), then hires the contractor, finds the volunteers, and finally selects an applicant.

It would probably just take someone to start a Habitat chapter in your area, start raising money, find a site, get everything else lined up, and finally select a family.

i prefer radiant heating from the floor if it makes a difference.

Thanks everybody! I'll post some pics as it goes along.

On the heating, the last house our Habitat chapter did has radiant heating, but it's just in a concrete floor. The lady has dogs and allergies. So I'm not sure what other type of flooring they'd be able to do over radiant.

We're actually putting electric radiant heating in the bathrooms and kitchen floors of my grandma's old house that we're remodeling.

My daughter is kinda partial to having a forced air natural gas furnace, cuz she might be able to add an air conditioning unit later.

Tomorrow we pick ( I mean she picks) the floor plan. We're hoping they'll let her add a shower to the 1/2 bath that is standard. There's a $1800 fund for "extras" that would pay for things like a washer/dryer, fence, dishwasher...and hopefully a shower.

Then she had to line up volunteers. Any takers? We'll feed you an NDN taco dinner with the works.

                          Congrats!

A couple of years ago, I did electrical work in a Habitat house they built near me. It was fun, nevermind the heat (like mid 90's that day) as they had not installed the stairs yet and so we had to use extension ladders to go between floors, basically a 20 foot deep hole from the second floor.

                            Congratulations to your daughter !
When I was in school ( for landscaping ) one of our class projects was to design and install a landscape plan for a Habitat home. The family who got the home was a joy to work with.
                            Good luck with the process.

Honestly I can't not find the origin of this story. All I can say it is one that my mother and grandmother shared with my brother and I as kids. I do know that my mother said that her grandmother used to tell this story to her when she was a child. My mother passed in 1984 at age 39, my grandmother...
