  • Anybody know how many tribes...

... there are in the United States (including Alaskan Natives). I always say over six hundred. I know there are way more.

Anybody know how many first Nations groups there are in Canada? I heard over 500 bands?

How many tribal groups are in Mexico?

    How about the Carribean?

Pre-contact there were thousands of tribal societies, South America they are still "finding" new tribes in the Rain Forest.

BIA has a register of 564 tribes (federally-recognized tribes) so add up all the other that are Non-recognized....but leave out the Crop Circle Tribe, LOL.

I did a search "Indigenous Peoples of the Americas" and there were HUGE lists, but no total figures ? Huh?

Easter Island, where did they go?

      Mi Amigo,

There were so many more tribes that were in existence in 1491, than there are today. Depending on what scholar or researcher you ask, there was estimated between 4 and 75 million inhabitants in North America pre-contact. By 1900, there were only approximately 250 thousand indigenous peoples left.

Since contact many tribes have become extinct. while others were absorbed by other tribes.

I agree that there are 564 tribes are federally recognized. But what about the state recognized, added on to those tribes that have applied for state/federal recognition but have not received it and those tribes that don't believe that state/federal recognition is what makes you a tribe?

That is the reason for this post. I play it on the safe side and say, "there are over 600 tribes and Alaskan Native communities in the United States." ~ That way this is a true statement.

I actually think there are between 8 and 9 hundred tribes and Alaskan Native communities existing in the United States.

      Anybody???

        Tambien Amigo,

I have worked on projects with The US State Department, The Amazon Alliance and National Geographic. I also travel to S. America to visit indigenous community members.

One thing they are all in agreement is...

"There are AT LEAST 40 Indigenous jungle tribes in S. America that have never seen a white man!"

Several times, I've read about 800 federally, state, and non-recognized tribes in the US, but I don't remember where I've seen it.
