Just wanted to know what u guys thought about these when u seen them around.

It seems like here in TX, I see them EVERYWHERE! I dont feel honored or appreciative to be represented this way.

I feel that they should be stored and left to private collectors in personal home collections much like the old Sambo and Aunt Jemima art work.

    What do u guys think?

I'm thinking about creating a picture site of all these wooden creations I see around.

I've never liked them since the first one I saw when I was little. I agree that they shouldn't be out on public display, but put away so they're not out there offending NDN people.

And that Johnny Cash song - Poor ole' Kalijah. That's always rubbed me the wrong way.

On the other hand, have you seen those big wooden carvings some guy made years ago and donated one to each state. They're pretty cool and very TALL. I think I've seen 3 of them. I know there's on in Idaho Falls, I think the Wyoming one is in Buffalo.
    ...it is what it is...

Here's a pic on one on the East Coast. The guy's name is Peter Toth and he did carve one in each state ending with a Polynesian carving in Hawaii in 1988. Now he's gone on to do some in Canada and Mexico.

Hey Super did you take that picture on my front porch????

I thought everyone knew that was the best way to let all the neighbors know you are a real live NDN.

Hank williams, Johnny Cash both sang Kawliga. I didn't like the song either.

and for those that wanted to see the lyrics they were talking about, here you go:

Kawliga was a wooden Indian standing by the door
He fell in love with an Indian maid over in the antique store
Kawliga - A, just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer Yes or No

He always wore his Sunday feathers and held a tomahawk
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday he'd talk
Kawliga, too stubborn to ever show a sign
Because his heart was made of knotty pine

Poor ol' Kawliga, he never got a kiss,
Poor ol' Kawliga, he don't know what he missed
Is it any wonder that his face is red
Kawliga, that poor ol' wooden head. ...

Kawliga was a lonely Indian never went nowhere
His heart was set on the Indian maiden with the coal black hair
Kawliga just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer Yes or No

Poor ol' Kawliga, he never got a kiss,
Poor ol' Kawliga, he don't know what he missed
Is it any wonder that his face is red
KAW-LIGA, that poor ol' wooden head. ...

Then one day a wealthy customer bought the Indian maid
And took her, oh, so far away, but ol' Kawliga stayed
Kawliga just stands there as lonely as can be
And wishes he was still an old pine tree.
