  • let's talk bout some rez cooken!!!

at this moment i am cooking up some shinob naaboob. mmmmm. i was thinking, i would like to share some of our recipes and here some from other tribes. the one thing i have seen in our cooking is these are easy recipes, no need for measuring. lol. well usualy.
this particular soup is birthed from commod boxes. lol.

boil some hamburger in water. add spices, what ever you like.
i add a good amount of salt. (because you need to season the meat and the potatoes to come) pepper, onion pepper, and chopped garlic.

when the hamburger is boiled and falling apart, break the bigger pieces up, then add large chopped potatoes, like four. i also add the can of corn at this time, as well.

when the potatoes are about half way done, add your elbow mac. enough for the soup, depends on how much you are making. lol told you, no recipe. it is all done by eye. lol.

when everything is cooked i add a can of tomato sauce and let that all have sex on simmer for about five minutes. mmmm tast and season.

    lmao commod box shinob naboob!!!

so let's have some coffee or other dirnks and share some good ole meals. our jewish friend is, as always welcome to share amongst us frolicing skins! howah! lmao, everyone is welcome to share!

Boiled whole white corn kernels today with cut up lamb neck and back bone!! After five hours, the lamb meat just slide of the bone and corn is nicely plumped up!! The kernels came from my dad's fields and the lamb from a local farm freshly butchered on Friday!

You can't ask for anything better than that other than grilled lamb ribs.

both of my parent knew how to really cook! my mouth just watering with the memories...
i didnt grow up on a rez, but, if the Jew guys can share, so can i! **laughin**
again..no recipes, just what i remember from watching. now that i am thinking of it, most were either soups or stews...maybe cos of the size of the family and friends who often joined us at meal times.

                  ox bone tail soup

boil the heck outta the bones with seasoning until the meat falls off
add hominy, some corn, a few carrots, and chopped up celery
                  salt n pepper to taste
serve with lots of homemade hot tortillas fresh off the comal!
if you have REAL BUTTER all the better!

after the soup is all gone, wash the bones really good and give to kids to play with. my little brother thought they looked like little airplanes....i strung them and made necklaces. then we used them for stacking like blocks, or in toss games, stick games. the holes in the center were good to try to throw a stick in or on. we had lots of fun with those bones! sometimes just trying to keep the dogs from running off with them! **laughing**

                          no backs, necks, or tails...

im not sure what this one is called...but i LOVED it and made it for my family all the time.
its another of my DADS dishes...

                          it takes eggs
                          flour tortillas
                          chopped onions
                          tomato sauce or salsa
lard ( but i used cooking oil )
                          salt n pepper

tear or cut up tortillas 1"-2" and lightly brown in cast iron skillet with fat, put aside to drain on paper towels.
next cook onions until clear, add scrambled eggs and browned tortillas pieces keep stirring until egg well cooked. add tomatoe sauce or salsa and season to taste, serve and eat right away. this is a good way to eat hardened / dried tortillas, or when you have some left over but not really enough to go around, and you have lots of eggs.

I wasn't raised on a rez either, but my dad made me something he said his mom made every year after corn harvest: Fried Corn

He mixed corn and grease, probably bacon grease, in an iron skillet and fried it. That's it. It was chewy but really good.

Tomorrow is FISH FRIDAY!! So I'm on the look out for a good fish taco recipe. I think I had one at a restaurant once and it wasn't that great, but I know there's probably a good recipe out there somewhere.

                                Any suggestions?

The fish should be grilled or fried, not battered....
