November 19th was apparently International Men's Day - I didn't realize it until today.
Anyway, on two separate occasions, I was told some things over the weekend that made me look at myself and think about how it is to be a Native Man.
The first was an invitation from Native Men's Magazine Native Men's Magazine - reaching determined and positive Native American Men to participate in an interview on my life as a Native male working in a corporate world.
Then the second comment came from a front office manager at a hotel as I was checking out. She said "Do you ever think about having your picture taken by a professional photographer? You have an excellent profile of what a Native Man should look like". I actually laughed out loud and told her about my encounter with Native Men's Magazine and their ideas of running an article not only based on myself as a physical human being growing up on a reservation, but also highlight my life-long career as a software engineer. Her reply was: "There you go! What are you waiting for?".
The objectives of celebrating an International Men's Day include focusing on men's and boy's health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models. It is an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care.
