I DO get scared by these kinds of stories!!!

I've heard a lot of them & enough of them over the years.....of things that have happened....of things that I know are true!

We have a Menominee word/phrase/saying that's pronounced like "youu-pee-na". (I don't know the correct spelling..??? & there are a couple of different ways/inflections that we say it to add emphasis.) I remember when I was a little kid, my mom saying it & asking her what it meant.

I don't know; it's like when you feel the presence of bad spirits are around, like something isn't right...something is off; or like when de ja vu is happening, or when something weird happens....it's those kinds of moments.

I think it's kinda like the equivalent of Christians who make the sign of the cross to protect themselves like I've seen them do in scary movies. A way of acknowledging & protecting yourself.

A funny story though....over the years, there were times when my mom would shorten this phrase to just "YOU! or YEW!"....so we 'all (in my family) knew what my mom was saying/what she meant by how she said it. But there were a couple of times when I distinctly remember being around all White people. They didn't understand....my mom was talking Menominee. (Same phonetic sound with 2 completely different meanings.) A couple of them turned around with startled faces & thought she was calling out/referring to them...

Yah, so when I listened to this Brit retell these stories in this video, I said, "Yew-pee-naa" outloud & to myself!

Maybe that's what the little boy meant in that novel "Little". All he ever said was "You". I wondered about that.

Hmmm???...I don’t know/can’t say…..this could be completely coincidental & random, or maybe not??

I know of the book, but haven’t read it. Just a suggestion: maybe you might want to reach out to the author, David Treuer, & let him know you enjoyed reading his story & ask him about the boy & the meaning.

When my son was in grade school & high school, he had book reports to do thru out the years; so 2 times he wrote to the authors & I was surprised they both replied! Maybe you’ll have good luck, too!

The Ojibwe & the Menominee tribes have had a very long history of being friends together. (Personally, in my family, we have several close friends who are Chippewa & are like family; when I was kid & there were some problems in my family, a Chippewa family took us in, let us stay with them & helped us out. I will always be grateful to them & for what they did for us!)

The name Menominee actually comes from the Ojibwe language & is how they referred to us as "The Wild Rice People" because they felt that in the old days where ever we would travel to, wild rice would flourish around us (at least that's the story I've heard.) Our name for ourselves is different (Omaeqnomenenewak).

Now I'm gonna put "Little" on my reading list!

Back in the '90s when Little came out I ran into David and Jim Northrup on a chat and told him then how much I liked Little, but I didn't think to ask him about why Little said "You" all the time.

A writer friend, Ed Two Rivers, is married to a Menominee lady. I haven't met her, though, just Ed. They live in Chicago and I never get that far north.
