That looks like a lot of more driving than I am used to. Longest drive was about 1.200 km or about 745 miles.

The US is a big place. Texas is almost twice the area of Germany. Germany is about 15% larger than New Mexico. If you really want to see it right, it's going to take many trips. You will also need to fly between parts of the country.

Before 9/11 made air travel as much fun as a root canal, I never drove from DFW to NM or SD or TN. Heck, you used to be able to fly from Dallas to Houston for the price of two tanks of gas and in under 2 hours. Now the security strip search line takes longer than the the drive. (Besides, I'd miss the Bucee's in Madisonville.)

Well, if you're going to stay a year I need to add a few things to your itinerary. Let's see.... East TN and Western NC...

First off to the Smoky Mountains. We'll get you a room in Walland or Townsend, so you can miss most of the hideous tourist traps, unless you have a burning need to go to Dollywood. Get up at the crack of dawn and drive up to Cades Cove. If you're lucky there will be mist and elks in the fields. You can stop and see the historic cabins, churches and the mill. Hike up to Abrams Falls. Maybe the next day you can go tubing on the Little River.

Maybe head up I 40 toward Greenville/Johnson City. You can swing over and see Davy Crocket's birthplace.

Then go over Newfound Gap and into Cherokee. Go to the museum, Oconaluftee Indian Village and take in Unto These Hills. Do a little shopping. Find out about the role of genus Dolomedes in Cherokee cosmology.

If you're there in July, head down to Robbinsville, NC and find Little Snowbird Baptist Church. Listen to some of that fine Cherokee hymn singing. Find out why some choirs/congregations will ask you the stand during Guide Me, O Jehovah.

If you're there in the spring, try to find a ramps, eggs and trout meal. Maybe you'll b e luck enough to be there for the Rainbow and Ramps Festival. Learn to eat grits, cornbread, greens, hominy. In the right seasons try to find a paw paw, a hickory nut, and a persimmon. If you get a chance to eat bean bread, fried hominy, and/or grape dumplings take it.

Head down to Cleveland, TN and go to Red Clay. Then head to Blythe Ferry and see the Cherokee Removal Memorial. Learn about amazing, heroic battle the Cherokee made to retain their cultural and national identity. They had many great men and women, who restructured their laws, administrative systems, and cultural institutions in an attempt to find an accommodation with the invading settlers that would allow them to retain their sovereignty. Find out why Worcester v. Georgia is the foundation of modern relations for every tribe in the US.

Look at the Cherokee signs you'll see in many places. Go to Sequoyah's birth place in Vonore, TN. The Cherokee are the nerds of Native America :) They are one of the very very few people to develop an original writing system. Within five years of its official adoption, your average Cherokee was more likely to be literate than your average non-Indian.

Let me see, another place to send BA during his year in the States..... I got it! Southwestern NM and southern AZ.

Since you're an alien in the States, I'll start you out in Roswell, NM. In the morning head over to the Roswell Museum and Art Center. You can walk through the recreation of Robert Goddard's workshop and see his notebooks and journals. Then you can see the spectacular beadwork in the Rogers and Aston collection. They have some amazing Lakota beadwork from the early reservation years, collected by a physician who worked in SD. You can see one of my favorite paintings -- Powwow by Willard Midgette. They also have a fair number of works by Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, who both painted the NM landscape

Then you can get lunch at Martin's Capital Cafe. You must get the stuffed sopapilla with green chili sauce. (Remember the state question is "red or green?" Red is usually milder. And Christmas is the answer if you can't decide.) Get a cup of the green sauce to go with the chips, instead of the salsa. My cousin and I have been known to eat their green sauce with a spoon. The green chili, cheese fries are good too.

If you were remotely interested in contemporary art I'd send you to the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art. There are some nice pieces there. But since you're no fan of modern art, off to Bottomless Lakes State Park. Watch out for the velvet ants.

The next day you can drive west on US380 into the Hondo Valley. It is beautiful. Then head up through the valley between Seirra Blanco mountains and the Captian Mountians. It is heaven on earth. You'll see why the Mescalero's lived here.

Stop at the Old Lincoln County Courthouse. Learn about Billy the Kid, Pat Garret, and the Lincoln County Range wars.

Stay on US 380 heading west to San Antonio. You'll go through the Jornada del Muerto desert, along the northern edge of the White Sands Missile Range. About 10 miles east of the Rio Grande, you'll hit the junction of NM 525.

This road leads to the Stallion Gate and into White Sands Missile Range and on to the Trinity Site. Twice a year it is open to visitors. Last weekend was this fall's tour day. It is said that early risers at Zuni, Laguna and Isleta saw the flash of light and heard the explosion, on that morning so long ago when the sand was turned to glass.

Tomorrow, unless folks want me to quit annoying them, I'll send you into Arizona for my favorite drive.

A minor correction of the title. An article seems to have gone missing the in the translation of a Spanish place name to German and back to English -- It is The Los Alamos Primer. The text is from Edward Condon's (of Franck-Condon Principle fame) notes of Robert Serber's series of technical orientation lectures given to arriving Manhatten Project scientists. If you don't eat modern physics for breakfast, it's not light bedtime reading.

Speaking of breakfast... Chuy, could I please have some grapes, a cup of blue cornmeal mush and some iced tea.


BA, once we get you to San Antonio, NM you need to hang a left and stop at the Bosque Del Apache Wildlife preserve. The bird watching is fantastic. If you're were there right now you could see the Sand Hill cranes.

When you're tired of the birds, head back up I-25 and get on to US 60 in Socorro. Stop at the Buckhorn Cafe and sample the green chili cheese burger. Stroll around the historic town square and San Miguel Mission. It isn't Old Town Albq or Santa Fe, but it's pretty. Hit the Mineral Museum at the NM Bureau of Geology near the NM Institute of Mining and Technology. (Buy bottled water before leaving town because I'm going to send you walking in the desert.)

Then head west on US 60 through Magdelena. Once you pass Mt Withington start watching for NM 52. Your next stop is the Very Large Array Radio Telescope.

Since you'll be feeling peckish after hiking around the self-guided tour of the VLA, stop at Pie-o-neer Pies, in Pie Town. My favorite is the cranberry apple crumb. Keep heading west into Arizona. In Springerville, get on AZ 260.

Near Sunrise lake you'll cross into the Fort Apache rez. If you stop at Sunrise Park you can look south and see Mt Baldy or to the White Mtn Apache Dził Łigai Sí'án. This is one of four sacred mountain ranges in the Apache homeland. People still make pilgrimages for prayer and ceremony. Although there are trails and the north eastern slope is off the reservation and on national forest land, show your respect by admiring the mountain from a distance.

After passing through McNary, get on the AZ 73 and head to Fort Apache. Visit the museum and the old fort.

When you get back on US 60, heading toward Globe, you'll be beginning your trip into the Salt River Canyon. But you've heard me wax poetic over that drive before, LOL.

Looks like they're getting frost up in northern NM. The pinion harvest should be going full swing. Because of the drought it's not going to be a good year :(
