Well, you may heat the attic with the heating pads. Best you have a couple of electric ones and a couple of those which you can fill with hot water, heated by fire, either torch or wood charcoal or beach planks.

Alternative gas radiation heater or gas welder though with the last one I think you need to be careful.

The beast is what Creator provided ! Venison , so lean there's almost no grease ! Black beans and red kidney beans and Eye's special blend of seasonings ! YUM ! A little corn bread on the side ! Just spicy enough to make your nose run but not unbearable ! Hits the spot in this cold.
we got about 2-3 inches so far but the second round just got here. Snowing hard right now and it's suppose to keep on till noon tomorrow !
Rose , you should get at least some sort of alternative heat ! I have several small propane heaters that work good in emergencies (they'll run 3 days on a bbq bottle ) and we have a small generator that will run the furnace, sump pump , lights and a few other things (tv) and if need be we can unplug 1 thing and run something else. We also cook with natural gas , as well as heat , the gen just runs the blower on the furnace.

My friend in Shreveport got a whole house generator. It saved her fanny last year during the hurricane and then during the winter storm. She was on that thing for 4 weeks, last year.

I've been in the process of getting estimates for a whole house generator. But I have to get the panel replaced, which means it's got to come up to the 2022 code. I have to have the breaker box moved into the house. That is getting pretty daunting.

The real problem I have is the furnace and water heater is in the attic. I can't get up there. With my hips, I can't climb the ladder.

But so far, it looks like we didn't get much ice, at least in this part of town. We have 1-1.5" of sleet and it is still falling.

The chili sounds good. I'll take some to go, please :)

Well , you can have some of todays. Apparently it wasn't warm enough so Eyes added some red pepper and stirred it in , then back in the fridge overnight ! LOL It'll be plenty warm tonight !
We ended up with 6-8 inches of snow , but with the wind we have bare areas and drifts 3 ft high , and even more deceptive are the ditches that appear level ! Eyes took Troy down to do his business and got halfway across the ditch and got off balance in the drifted snow and basically sat back in the drift ! LOL I had to help her out all while laughing at her and her dog ! I never have a camera when I need one ! Hope everyone stays warm and safe !

Only rain and about 50 but it never really stops raining. Fields ae muddy with small lakes on the surface.

And thanks for the offer for Chili with bread. Something to drink for extinguish the fire of hot chili?

We're 16F this morning with 2.5" of sleet and snow on an unknown amount of ice. My office/TV room is 58F. Allegedly, we'll reach 32F today with some sun. Yesterday, we only got up to 24F. Hopefully we'll melt some of the ice out of the trees. I'll feel much less stressed when I don't see ice on all these old hackberries and pecans filling the alleys and overhanging the powerlines. Last winter's week in the deep freeze and the pecan borers damaged a lot of trees and they're turning into widow-makers.

We should really thaw out on Sat. We're supposed to be above freezing for around 6 hours. I can't wait. I feel so trapped. I covered my steps and part of my front walk with tarps in the hopes the ice would form on top, and be able to be broken-up and sweep off. With my hips, I can't manage any ice on the stairs.

Last winter's storm put the fear of the Lord into folks. People actually stayed home and off the ice. There are only dog tracks on my sidewalks and just a couple tire tracks in the street. It's creepy to be this close to downtown, in the middle of the hospital district, and between two railroad switching yards and not hear cars, helicopters, sirens, or trains. I'm so pathetic; I had to turn on radios and the TV so I couldn't hear the quiet. It was making me nervous, lol.

Ercot seems to have learned some lessons. They are running with a larger than normal reserve capacity. They also have a large amount of committed capacity and fast start generators ready to go. The Railroad Commission, not so much. They didn't force the the gas fields out in the Permian basin to winterize. We had some natural gas supply reductions.

Jet is riding this out boarding at the vet's. When I took him in on Tues, he sang the song of his people the whole drive. I hope he's being better behaved during his "captivity." The Meow Mob however is drinking from his heated water bowl, sleeping in his heated shelter and scratching at the windows, hoping I'll fill his food bowl. They find my tarp arrangement very weird and are trying to get underneath, lol.

Sunshine ! Today we have sunshine ! Warming a bit , supposed to hit 34 today ! Let the melting begin ! We'll finish up the chili today and I think tomorrow will be Spanish rice and chicken b**bs ! Everyone stay warm , stay safe !

Yippee! We've had sun for about 4 hours and just hit 32F. My office has hit 64F. It looks like most of the ice is out of trees. Much of my street is clear. The main road out of the neighborhood is in shadow and is still a sheet of ice. However, I'm feeling much safer. Thanks to the Creator for getting us through this so far. Just tonight's hard freeze left.

We're down to less than a dozen electrical outages in the city limits. According to the distribution company's outage map most are equipment outages. Our distribution system can take sizzling heat, but snow and ice, and squirrels not so much. (This fall, our plant and the entire surrounding subdivision was plunged into darkness by a suicidal squirrel.)

One more day. We'll probably be 95%+ clear by Sunday, just some ice along the sides of the road under the bridges and the permanent lake/skating rink at the intersection by Arts Fifth lingering.


If you northlanders want to laugh at us: Last night on the news they were talking about one of the tonier bedroom communities of Dallas. The reporter was talking about that city's snow plow being out. Then they cut to a shot of a smallish pickup with a blade on front. It was slipping and sliding along scraping a half a lane.

When I moved to Austin in '82 they didn't even own a snowplow , nor did San Antonio ! In Austin the first year we got 4 inches of snow and the entire city shut down ! It was crazy ! They quickly learned their lesson !

I'm not sure what we have ! Water , sugar free grape drink , coffee , and I believe Eyes has some English Tea........Our friends in England sent her some"proper tea" ! LOL

Hm, I may stay with the sugar free grape fruit or water. For certain fires I have heard, water helps.

We were actually able to thaw out some late in the week. Thursday hit about 75, and Friday, it made it all the way to 82. The pollen also came with it, so it's back on the allergy meds for me. Yesterday and today were damp, dreary and chilly, but no freezes. The cat cheered up for a couple of days since she could reclaim her yard from the stray ferals.
Chili sounds good, along with some iced tea. Even in the winter, I need my iced tea with food.
