Per Capita

Well it looks like there are some greedy a$$ people on my rez. These folks are gonna end up ruining my tribe! There is going to be a meeting on the 13th to discuss a petition that 50 people signed that is calling for a new per capita distribution plan. This plan would eliminate the $750 annual payment that we get now and it would replace it with an initial $2000 payment, the proposed plan increases payments each year until it reaches $5000 per enrolled citizen. That amount would be given to us each year until essentially my tribe runs out of funds or unless someone proposes a new plan. Now, if this goes through alot of the services that my tribe provides for members such as schooling and the burial fund and what not, will not be there because they will have to take that money so they can pay the per capita distribution plan.Right now they have $11.25 million budgeted for the per capita for tribal members, if this plan goes through the tribe will have to come up with $75.28 million that they don't have! I really hope this plan does not go through because not only does it mean that some of the services we get now won't be there but it also means that people will lose there jobs and get pay cuts! My tribe doesn't have the funds for this plan!I can't stress this enough!If any of you are part of the Oneida Tribe in Wisconsin I plead with you go to that meeting and vote against this petition!

holeh! Your people should be happy with the $750 or whatever it was! Thats crazy, my tribe gives every enrolled member $50... yup thats right fifty dollars. Your people should appreciate what your tribe has already, and not get greedy.

DANG!!!!!!!! we haven't gotten our percap for 4 years, and when we did get it, it was 32.00 per year.

My tribe is giving out a Christmas bonus but not really sure how they are managing that as we are supposed to be broke! :Mad

Wow! I never realized that some tribes got as little as $50! I knew some tribes didn't have alot of money but I never realized....I am greatful that we even get money though which is why I am trying so hard for people to vote against this petition! If this passes, in 2007 we may not even have funds to pay everybody! Let alone some of the loans the tribe has. It's sad that people in my tribe could be so greedy! If this passes we will be broke, and sooner rather than later, I believe they won't even be able to give us anything! I heard that Pottawatomies get something like $10,000 every 3 months! Do any of you know if that is true? That's crazy!That would be nice if we could get alot of money but not at the expense of our tribe being broke.

There are tribes out west that get as much as 15,000 a month.:o Crazy huh. My tribe gives it out twice a year. It averages bout 2 grand a year. It's all about location. I'm happy with the little I have. There are some that don't get a penny, like my hubby's tribe. My tribe provides all those services as you described and they still find a way to give us a little pocket change. They only distribute 25% of there total revenue. Which makes everyone happy. Besides if they gave it to us every month than we would lose 40% of our tribal employee's.

my tribe has a fund you can apply for in times of need. They also offer help for burials and moving expenses... but we don't get an annual per cap or anything.

but we have a good dental clinic that offers laser teeth whitening even and a health clinic with fitness center.

they also increased the education awards to include masters degrees.

so i guess not having a per cap is good if you are able to use the above services.

Last night I wrote a whole little thing to this and when I got done and submitted..I had to login again!!!!!!!! :Yell And then it just did it again..this really ticks me off and I wish I knew why it happened..but anyways! lol

I don't know how much money Forest County Potawatomi's get but I know it's a lot. But they have a HUGE casino down in Milwaukee that can support that amount of per cap for the amount of members. I also heard they closed their rolls because of people just coming there to get the money.

My tribe gives us $2000 a year, $500.00 every 3 months. There is a group of people here who have been trying to get the per cap upped here but it hasn't gone anywhere. Per cap is nice to get but I could live without it, but I also have a job! LOL Our per cap distribution is the highest tribally funded program in our tribe's budget. We can't afford to give our members more money when we have to pay for other loans and also provide good services.

It seems to be a no win situation. Even if the Oneida tribe gave your members the per cap they want, they may not be happy and will want it upped again in a few years! I know your casinos in GB make good money but not as good as some of the tribes who are near bigger metropolises(sp?) and people need to realize this. Our council has been accussed by some people of embezzling money cuz that is the reason we don't get more per cap!

I hope y'all can come to terms down in Oneida. Good luck getting the word! :)

Geez i know huh!
I think we're pretty damn lucky to even get any form of Per Cap from our tribe....we get ours 3 times a year, usually around the busiest times of the year.......Christmas, Spring (Easter) & August right before Crow fair & school starts.
The amount varies as well & it's not even remotely close to the big bucks you guys are talkin bout.....any little bit helps!

geeze louise... maan... ya'll are talkin' buku bucks here and i'm lucky to see an $80 check! i'm thankful that i get the $$ from my tribe... but c'mon... think of those tribes that don't get anything.... then think about who's being "greedy!"

I hear ya southernstyle. Seems the more we get, the more we want. at least we have the IHS, contract health, dental, and many other tribal programs to help out. It by no means justifies what happened during the turn of the century (thats a whole different thread), but it is something anyway. I'm glad that I wasn't "spoiled" by the government or the tribe...I work for what i want and if I can't afford it, i will go without, and if I need more money, I will go get another job.
