Temporary? Don't understand, in our Nation when you get your Spirit name it is forever, curious tho as to what it means and is. Wait now, kinda comming alive, first cup of coffee, you mean someone gave you a name and they didn,t know what it meant, or is it a Cherokee thing and you have to go find out yourself, naming Ceromonies are taken very seriously around here and it just seems kinda hokie to me. Hope somebody wasn't just messin with you that would be some cold shyt.Last edited by keeb_k; 01-22-2004, 09:04 AM.I Was Indian Before Being Indian Was Cool!! Perhaps it means:
"Temporary Cherokee" (or at least until it can become permanent)

ya'll sure are cute.
Nothing official or ceremonious. My teacher knows what it means but did not tell me right away and won't write back until tomorrow. She's Cherokee, not me.
When she lets me know I'll let you know unless one of you knows and tells me first then I will sign my next email to her with the translation. Long sentence, eh?Why do they keep calling me Uk Shan?

David, dude, it means childish or immature. It can also mean, scanty, incomplete, doesn't measure up, a little bit, an insufficient amount.
Child in Cherokee is "a yo tli".
If they try to name you "uk shan"(sounds like OOK shan), hit 'em. It means a**hole.
Coyotes aren't native to the eastern part of Turtle Island, so we don't have a name just for them, usually refer to them as "wa ya - usdi" or little wolf. Those of us who farm for a living refer to them as varmints.
