Could someone confirm or deny my theory? I suspect the great-great-grandmothers being the last real indian in many families was the result of the Dred Scott decision (1857) which gave constitutional rights to citizens only. African slaves could never become citizens but native Americans could because they were indigenous people.

This made US citizenship the only way for NDNs to have constitutional protection. Since no one could have dual citizenship prior to 1948, the great-great-grandmothers did not enroll when the tribal rolls were formed.

Anyone know the real story?
