My preference as an engineer is to use the language that requires the most code to do the job, At this point, I only write general apps for PC Linux and [shuddering] Windows.
I'm a fluids guy, and I work in hypersonics right now, so I know how you feel about the 'nerd' stuff. I get it all the time but I agree it is so totally awesome to see this stuff mature and develop. If people only knew how much work actually went into putting things into space, they'd probably flip their wigs.... I wish we could get more young people today enthused about math and science. I think the types of projects that you are working on will continue to provide some of the motivation. Hopefully soon my group will be able to contribute something to that cause as well.
I've been philosophising for some time that we should convert to base 60 notation in our daily lives. (Maya maybe? I can't remember where I stole that idea)
