Anybody eles picking up on the "inside jokes" that seem sto show up in all of these Hollywood/NDN movies?

Like in Dances W/White Fools, some of the names were just so hokey and in Windtalkers-White Horse? A Navajo? I mean c'mon!

One I've caught in "Into The West"-when that one Lakota Man has his first born son and what he names the kid? I know there are "secret names" and all, but this was 'supposed' to be the kid's baby name..

    One Horn Bull, my butt.

Even my girlfriend who family is 2nd Gen. Swedish in the US caught that... We laughed and laughed. Maybe our heads are just in the wrong place....
Because of our treaty status, the distinction of being 'Cherokee' is a status of citizenship, not a racial issue.

Clearing throat...I believe it was the Cheyenne chief played by Jay Tavares that named his son 'One Horn Bull'. What's so funny about the name ? Seriously, I mean it coulda meant something very profound to them; just like 'Chico Her Many Horses' means something to Len and his family.

Yes, I am watching this show. I agree that it is not completely accurate, but at least it is not so one-sided, in favor of white settlers and military, as most movies of this type have been in the past. I feel like Spielburg is at least trying to portray more accurately the mistakes the white men made in dealing with the native people. Yes, it is not exactly, perfectly accurate, but no matter how accurate a movie production tries to be, there will always be someone to complain, on both sides of the issue. It is a good rendition of a STORY about the history of this country's westward expansion of white people, including the bad and good, the mistakes, that both "sides" made in dealing with each other during that period of time.

I am watching this show now. Having just read the book, I think many of you will find the last three episodes particularly disturbing. You may not wish to watch them.

            Show 4

I enjoyed watching tonights show, It shows how bad things really got out of hand. I find myself getting mad and at times wanting to cry. While I know that many do not like this program. I think that its one of the better ones out in a long time. It may not be correct all the time. But atleast the story is being told.

              Sky,
I was out of town over the holiday weekend and never got a chance to watch the episode b/4 tonight's. When I'm all "caught up" I'll post what I think.

I agree overall that it is better than some of the stuff that's been put out over the years. And even though we already know the "outcome" it's still painful to watch and remember however accurate/inaccurate it may be.

              Stay tuned.....

ok, so ep4 was my sister-in-law's big debut and they cut her line!!...oh well I still saw her lots of times...she was running through camp all over(and was supposed to say, "The soldiers are coming!") and was in the background alot in Irene's shots!

it was wierd that I was laughing and crying...such a horrible scene, but I was looking for family (her mom, dad and brother were in it too!).

it was a sickening scene, only cause i know it was much worse in real life. i hated how that one colonel told his lt. "see how these savages treat hostages?" and the "hostage" was a white friend of the tribe who was shot by the white soldiers.........

I agree with Sky. The truth must be put out there; and despite certain inaccuracies we've seen Spielberg has the ability to REACH his audience and the way he portrayed the massacre with the cracked photos had to have been burned into the brain of those watching. These were REAL people, Sand Creek and Wa*sh*t*a DID happen. Most non-Native people I've spoken to really have no idea about the repeated atrocities committed against our People; nor do they understand the anti-Indian mentality of the times. This show serves all of it up. I cried during that whole scene and really felt drained when the show was done.

I saw 4th screening last night when they are building the railroad. I was ticked when they didn't put the Pawnee people to protect the track workers and only had one indian working on the track. I like the ending when the indian warrior was looking at the railroad for the locomotive running down the track.

I've got my VHS tape already for tomorrow night!

One of my favorites, though, is still Last of the Mohicans. If only Eric coulda stayed lookin' that fine! Sigh...

Does anybody out there have a copy of "Unbowed"? it won a Native American Film Festival award a couple years ago. I can't find it anywhere. One of the actors in it is Jay Tavares who plays Chief Prairie Fire in ITW who makes off with the Wheeler cousin for five horses. http://www.jaytavare.com sigh....see pix of Jay with Nicole Kidman....with our luck (the ladeez...)he's gay...sheesh...
He was probably hotter when he was younger but the men can have him *L* not bad though just to old for my taste *L*. About the series I think its good but my brain has to regaster the charecters every episode and remember whos who. I cried on every episode so far it seems like there was something sad every time.

                              re:ITW

The program has been ironic and depressing at times. I've set aside the historical aspect, just knowing that it's probably not accurate and have followed the plot and characters instead. The cracking photos were better to sustain than seeing the people executed time and time again. Esp. when the soldier was standing there and pointing his weapon at the child. I've only watched some portions of episode 4 so hope to catch the rest. Nonetheless, the ndn men are gorgeous to watch...yummy!

Yeah, ditto about the men. Except I had a problem with Wes Studi. I like Wes alot but his dialogue and his hair really grated on me for some reason.
