I used to babysit her when she was younger, her mom is Janelle Romero who played the sister in jail in Powwow Highway.
Elizabeth Sage has looks and talent! The actress Clare Danes came to mind when I first saw Elizabeth. Elizabeth is sort of a brunette version of Danes. Drool, eh? It's hard for me to decide who looks better there's so much eye candy!

Well, at least we're still discussing the series! I'm glad to see that someone is taking the initiative to put out something accurate. It's true, the money and connections are things not easily obtained. Too bad some of the Rez casino's couldn't put up some $$$$.

Still, it doesn't hurt to "spread the word" in everyday life about inaccuracies and atrocities along with culture and customs.

I'm 50 years old. The best case scenario for me is that my life is 1/2 over. The first half I spent stumbling blindly through an existence that could have been alot more significant (despite some pretty cool accomplishments

Now, I'm ready to take a spiritual journey that starts with the Great Spirit/Creator and will continue with him as first priority. This includes appreciating life and all of the gifts in it. I say this b/cuz I consider my Seneca heritage a gift. I'm not full ndn like some, but my heart is true. I've said all along, I'm here to connect and to learn. With knowledge, I keep talking to people and "teaching" them little by little and dispel some of the crap that's been fed to us all over the years.

I'm also Catholic. The feast day for Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha was yesterday. I recently led a novena for her at a church. I included information about her heritage, not just focusing on the religious aspects. When we were done, the people in attendance said the presentation was great and that they had no idea about the things I told them. They actually thanked me and the word quickly spread throughout the church congregation. So, I do believe that an impact can be made even in small ways like that.

B/back later, my son's girlfriend is annoying me....

I was watching the show tonight I seen the battle of Little Big Horn when Custer got his A$$ handed to him. I was seeing the boarding school I almost started crying when they took the indian stuff off the kids.I can't deal with the cruelly we did to the Indians thats why I live my life like the indians.

Thanks for sharing, Janet....... I'm East coast and JUST saw what your talkin' about....Voices That Carry just cut his own hair. I feel like I could throw up!

My grandma went to Carlisle Indian School and knew Jim Thorpe. She told my aunt about how bad it was there.

I'm west coast and just saw Sheila Tousey offer tobacco on the battlefield for her son's journey...cried....again...

The good parts so far were showing Pratt that started Carlisle in PA, when our Crow warriors donned their own clothing before battle and even the scene where Jacob's soldier friend gives the letter to Robert Wheeler. This last bit shows the humanity of BOTH sides. I enjoyed seeing Eric Schweig again; much better in his role as Sitting Bull than when I saw him in Missing!

              Now, it continues...

God! More tears watching those families torn apart and the children taken away. Knowing about our history has seemed so different as compared to seeing it unfold on the screen... my heart aches...

Some of us here on this Board have been to boarding school; some of us have parents and grandparents who were sent to boarding school. I just want to say that I honor you all. In one way or another you are survivors; and those who have already left this world after experiencing this atrocity were also survivors.

The only thing I agree with that I heard in the Carlisle episode was the comment that to triumph over the White man our People have to be able to compete. This was conveyed by espousing 'education'. Well, that part is true. Each generation should make sure the next is empowered to 'survive'. The lessons of the past will help our children and their children look to the future and succeed!

                          Symbolism

I had a chance to sleep on it and this came to mind....
The juxtaposition of Carlisle trying to 'bleach' our People, next to the example of Margaret Light Shines teaching her children The Lakota Way. I took from this symbolism that we are stronger than those who would oppress us. So long as some of us don't forget and pass along the traditions we cannot be exterminated. The example of MLS teaching what was taught to her by her mother, and to her mother by her mother keeps The Circle going.

What of the virtues we are all given at birth and then must acquire by our lifestyle. What has happened to this philosophy? When despair fills the heart and soul of The People...when unemployment, addiction and domestic abuse cause the People lose their way... We may disparage non NDNs as being 'new age' for trying to adopt some of 'Our' ways, and even criticize other tribes for adopting a practice that is not theirs by origin (sun dance, pow-wow, etc.) But in cases where the philosophy is time honored and true bringing sense to a crazy world, why wouldn't others want to see if it works for them?

I know there was something else that grabbed me but I'm sorta overwhelmed right now. I'll remember it later.

I too am white, although I am told my grandmother was Cherokee, I have not been able to verify it. What the white man did, period, makes me sick to my stomach with every show I watch.

I don't remember who it was last night in the show that was talking about how history is told or exactly how he said it, but in essence he was saying that history would be told the way the white man wanted it to be and more truthful words have never been spoken.

It is the character of Robert Wheeler, who with his wife Clara, joins Pratt at the Carlisle Indian School. He tells George Voices That Carry that he should strive to learn so he could put down the history of his People in writing, not to please Pratt but for his [Voices That Carry] children and their children because what White society calls 'history' is "written by those who win the battles". He tried to convey that the written word could help preserve Lakota culture for the future because he feared there would be no Lakota left to deliver the traditional oral history.

Thank you! I thought I was going to have to watch it again just so I could remember it.
