  • Who knew? Home theater setup under my nose

When we moved about 6 years ago I let my daughter take over on my Pioneer stereo system with receiver, 6-CD player, and double cassette player - circa 1993, with mega Pioneer speakers.

Now that I have my own apartment I needed something to listen to, and having picked up an extra set of Sony speakers for 50 CENTS at a yard sale, I over'd on my stereo once more.

I didn't even realize that the receiver had video ins and outs. It took a little while to figure it all out, but now I have my DVD, satellite, video game, and CD player all hooked together. Just looking for a set of speakers to hook up for my surround sound. It will actually hook up 4 pairs of speakers along with a center speaker.

I never even heard of surround sound back in '93!

      Wyo_rose,
Be careful in your speaker setup. There is an electronic calculation called impedance. Look at the back of your receiver. It will state the impeadance of the speaker output. For exanple most are 8 ohms impedance. That means for best sound responce you should use 8 ohm speakers.

When you add extra speakers, let's say 2 pair of 8 ohm speakers (2 speakers per side right and left) the impedance of the speakers will fall to 4 ohms. That 4 ohm load will double the power output from your receiver. Hence if your receiver is rated at 100 watts, the load at 4 ohms will cause the wattage to double to about 200 watts. Not a good thing. The over wattage will put a lot of strain on the power amps inside the receiver and may cause them to blow out.

Some newer receivers are stable down to 2 ohms load. That would be 3 sets of speakers tied to the outputs. It is also a feature of high quality pro amps like I wse for powwows.

Most home receivers are only stable to 4 ohms.

Be very careful in what speakers you hook up.

        Huh?

Anyway, my speakers don't even say what ohm they are. One is a massive Pioneer speaker that came with the set. The other two are Sony home stereo speakers. One keeps shorting out. Would that be an Ohm thing?

So the more speakers you add, the ohm goes down? Even though there's more speaker ports? I think there's room to hook up about 8 all together.

Thanks for the info though. I'm going to check my ohm's.

Atleast that what my friends are saying now. I've had some serious back problems recently and my doctor set me with a ten's machine to help the pain. It's portable electro therapy and works wonders! The wiring part is the electrodes are attached to a portable hand held control that you can attach to...

          Electric Fence
          by sneakysnake
We have the standard 6 ft. fence in the backyard, and a few months ago, I heard about burglaries increasing dramatically in the entire city. To make sure this never happened to me, I got an electric fence and ran a single wire along the top of the fence.
