  • Pre-Webcast checklist

With Powwow season and the subsequent webcasts coming fast around the corner it might be a good idea to verify that your computer is up to the task of receiving the webcast streams. Below I have come up with a simple checklist of things that you should do to help prevent software related problems that could keep you from enjoying the broadcast.
    1. 1. Make sure you are on a high speed or broadband connection, 56kbps dial-up is not sufficient enough for streaming media.
    2. 2. Keep your operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux...) up to date.
    3. 3. Make sure you have the latest version of Windows Media Player or at least the codec installed properly.
    4. 4. Check the settings on any security program to ensure that it is not blocking Windows Media Player or any of its components from accessing the internet.
    5. 5. Run a complete virus and malware scan as viruses and such can interrupt or prevent you from viewing the stream.
    6. 6. In order for the webcast to function properly you must have JavaScript and cookies enabled in your browser.

TB, would it help to increase the virtual swap-files to helps with the streaming? I find that if my computer has been running for a few hours it uses up my virtual memory and then the vids seem to stall and splutter. If I reboot the computer, and release the virtual memory, then the vids come in without the stalling etc.
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. — Robert A. Heinlein

Increasing your virtual memory, or paging file as some versions of Windows may call it, can increase the quality and stability of playback. The general consensus is that your virtual memory should be set to 1.5X the amount of RAM, or physical memory, you have. Also the min and max setting is also suggested to be the same size, but don't adjust it to the point where it will cause your hard drive to fall below 10% remaining free space. This brings up another point, once in a hwile its good to go through and run disk cleanup and disk defragment to optimize the space on your hard drive, also never let your hard drive get cluttered with so much stuff that you only have 10% or less free space as this will slow your system down considerably.

The devil has been working his keister off cleaning out tracking cookies from people's computer who are dumb enough to load Limewire and Bit Torrent and NEVER run disk cleanup.

I'm trying to figure out how to watch the webcast (and other 'stuff') on my little tv on the wall without running a cable from the bed to the tv. I should held out for and I5 or I7 instead of the lowly I3.

              BINGO!!!hahahaaa

BTW I'm running Kaspersky ISS on this laptop and desktop. I can watch the webcast on the desktop, but...

I doesn't fit in bed with me!

                Great Idea, makes sense

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the...
