I see your point. I live in the south and grew up around both full bloods and mixed bloods. I'm mixed myself and it bothers me to hear so many full bloods run down mixed bloods when we are all the same people. I live in a mixture of white/black/hispanic/Native community and many of us in the area are Native, both full bloods and mixed, we keep our culture and our traditions and we also work to help our community. Many of us also take the time to answer questions about our culture and our people and we tell the truth about what happened with the Trail of Tears and other white/Native history.
Your right if we could all band together we would have the loudest voice in the country.

ever take us seriously. In the old days a white man could be adopted by a Native as a son and he
was fully accepted even though he had not 1 drop of Native blood. Now we have mixed race Natives
who are not accepted by their own people because they have some white blood. It used to be what was
in your heart and your soul as well as your blood tht made you Native. I see jokes about whites
and have made a few myself, but we are no better than they are if we do not accept those of our
people whom are of mixed blood. The white culture will never accept the mixed race Natives and
even have laws preventing that them from claiming to be white. Many Mixed blood Natives could be
put on the rolls BUT, a grandparent or great grandparent paid a doctor or clerk 20 dollars to
list their mixed blood child as white so that that child would be able to own land or vote when
they reached their majority. Many people here forget that until the late 1950s a Native American
was not allowed to own land or vote in this country.
WE ARE OUR OWN BIGEST PROBLEM! I read stories here of people getting dropped from Tribal rolls,
of coruption in tribal goverments, of mixed blood people asking to be added to rolls and telling
the tribal councils they don't want the pre diems just the right to claim their hertiage and stil
being refused. We need to quit gripeing about the U.S. Goverment until we get our OWN TRIBAL
Goverments under control and the people wo have been dropped off of Tribal rolls reinstated, and
the mixed bloods who's hearts and souls are Native instead of white added to our rolls. Only when
we get the problems amongest ourselves fixed will we be able to become a force that the American
    Goverment will listen to.
Very good points, but it will never happen. Most of the people who reply to these threads don't understand because they might live in the Mid-west. Those in the regions where we live have had our elders forsake their heritage because of the very things you listed. Land, schools, jobs, the right to vote, doctor care, only those listed as white could have these in our areas. You were either white or colored, no between, not even Native. I guess one fear is that mixed bloods will soon, if not already, out number the full bloods. Maybe they fear we'll take something from them. I just want to be accepted into the circle, to be friends and brother to all. I don't think that is too much to ask. Numbers is power in this country. If all mixed bloods who could prove their heritage could join with the full bloods and become one voice, it would be a sight to see. One voice doesn't mean we give up our traditional tribal ways. We can be many tribes with one common voice. Other groups have one voice but live in different areas of the country, which means they are of different cultures according to where they live. Think about it.

Good points. We can't go around fighting each other that's how the British,French and Spanish used us all in the first place...Why fight your enemy when you can get your enemy to do the fighting for you!!! that was their motto...They just let us fight each other and eventually they'll just take over....
So we can't fight each other anymore and need to stop arguing with one another....does anyone know the story of the Grasshopper and the Ant? If we band together and help one another than we can change things....

I am a Navy veteran (served during Desert Storm) and most of my family have all served the Military, My bro just got back from Iraq...thank god...my cuz'n is still there. But we must not forget the ones who didn't come back, they are the ones we should thank for our "Freedom" no matter how you feel about the war....they sacrificed the ultimate for all of us whether you believe it or not...

I joined to make a difference.. and because my family couldn't afford college; so I enlisted to get the benefits of college. And now I'm working to pay off student loans...LOL

During college my views changed and I also believe in what Russell Means is doing. Dennis Banks and Clyde Bellecourt started AIM, but over the years ideas changed and civil rights has sort of been brushed under the rug...correct me if I am wrong..please.

I am Mix-blood and all my childhood I was teased and called a Halfbreed by whites and even by Fullbloods because I wasn't "fully Indian or white"....That has left a huge impact on my life....that retoric makes one feel that they can never be fully accepted by either race....not including the fact that I have 2 different nation bloodlines coursing through my heart.
It's not my fault that my parents and grandparents made the choice to marry outside their race....you can't blame the next generation for choices people made before they are even created.....

Anyway....we all need to band together and make a change....1st start with going to your tribal elders for advice and I mean all tribal elders not just the ones you favor...2nd if you have kids teach your children the traditions and tell them why we do the things we do...that will help the future generations with the good fight.....if you don't have kids help teach someone else's kids the way....community is how we will win this fight....give back to it and you will get back!!!!
If you change the way you look at things the things you look at will change!!!!

Violence never solves anything.....but a good kick in the A$$ once in while won't hurt either.

"You may not remember what you said yesterday to someone, but they will remember what you said for the rest of their lives"......

"Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade where I choose, free to choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to talk, think, and act for myself--and I will obey every law or submit to the penalty."

Well said. No one shoudl ever do anything but thank and feel humbled by those who bear the burden of protecting the rest of us. No don't like the war, can't figure out how we can get out without creating more insanity 5, 10 years down the road but instead of aiming the frustration at our warriors, aim it at the idiot shrub.
At how he lied and manipulated the facts, dragged this mess on by not sending the size force the experts suggested (which would have gotten us out in under a year before they could start to resent us and the militants could fund terrorist acts) and of course my pet peeve- we still don't have the piece of poop laden! I hope the ghosts of all the people from 9/11 make sure he never has another night without nightmares.
    grrrr.

For the record here, those people serving on active duty in the U.S. Military are not ALLOWED to run for public office since they are considered as filling a public office already. I personally don't care to hear those serving in the miiltary bashed when they are doing their jobs and defending our country's freedoms. Men and women serving in the U.S. Miltary today are VOLUNTEERS, they were not drafted and it is their choice to defend our county and our right to vote for any elected official we wish too. Don't bash them! People MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES on if they vote or not, if they help their community ect.. Just do your part in YOUR COMMUNITY and encourage others to do the same.
Oh and before anyone ask, I'm 45, my dad served in WW2 AND Korea, my brother is listed MIA in Nam and I vote and I volunteer in my community. Oh and just in case thats not good enough, most importantly, I'm a ARMY mom and ARMY mother-in-law, both of which have recently returned from Iraq.

Well, I'm all about uniting, for great causes, but I can't be the only person. If we want things to change, for the better, then the time is now! There is no need for violence, or negativity, but we need to get together, and show that we are SERIOUS!
I heard that people are going to BEAR BUTTE this summer, and they will be protesting.
It will going on during the Sturgis Rally, and even though I enjoy the rally itself, I am going to protest. I want to honor my ancestors, and this just one small step, I am taking.
If you are willing to participate, PM me, and I will give you details.

***PLEASE DON'T SEE THIS AS A NEGATIVE THING TO SUPPORT.***

I grew up in DC, my white dad was a newspaper man- a correspondant. No one in DC gives Natives any credit- because all we do is fight among ourselves. Tribe to Tribe, full to mix, city to rez. They have learned all they have to do is set us against each other and they can walk away with what they wanted while we are fighting. I sat in a classroom in high school (government i think, long time ago!)and had a teacher inform the entire class that "real indians do not exsist anymore".
To gain power for the future we have to learn to unite. When I was at IAIA, I tried to share some of the things I learned growing up in DC, a warning of how we are not seen by the "dominant culture". All I heard was that I was a mix- so shut up. How many people over the years have had ideas that could have helped us- that we told to shut up?
Talk about your ideas, then maybe you can get others to help make them happen. And listen, someone could see a weakness in your plan- and together you could fix it.

I agree, we mixed have some insights from living in different areas that could be of some help. While in the Marines I was stationed in DC. The various cultures there seem to stick together no matter what their blood level. One thing that helps them is a common language, maybe that's our problem. Though we're Native, we have so many different languages. Culture and beliefs are closely related, but the common bond of language isn't there between the various tribes. There's also seems to be separation from East Coast, West Coast, and Midwest. East Coast have more mixed bloods, less rez's, so we kinda get left out of the Native equation. If we were able to unite, we could be a strong force.
