SENECA FALLS, N.Y. — Authorities in western New York state have accused four people of stealing more than two dozen bronze plaques from the graves of military veterans.
Police in Seneca County say 23 bronze plaques honoring the veterans were pried from headstones at two Waterloo cemeteries last month, in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. Two veterans plaques from a cemetery in the Village of Seneca Falls were also reported stolen over the summer.
Two of the accused are charged with felony cemetery desecration. The other two are charged with criminal possession of stolen property.
Police say the thieves destroyed some of the plaques to sell pieces to scrap metal dealers.
Bail was set for each of the accused, who are expected to appear in court later this month.
