He joined the Corps before the Great Depression, served in Vietnam, and — amazingly — still lives to tell the story. The oldest living Marine turned 102 on Nov. 25, according to a report in the Philadelphia Bulletin.
Retired Master Sgt. Alfred DeSerio was born in 1906 in south Philadelphia and enlisted in the Corps in 1928, the Bulletin reported. He attended basic training at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
DeSerio served 42 years in the Corps, and fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired in December 1970.
During a ceremony held in his honor, he was presented with a flag flown over the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D.C., a citation and a challenge coin from the commandant and sergeant major of the Marine Corps according to the article.
When asked why he enlisted in the Marines, DeSerio told the Bulletin, “I saw a movie. The uniform looked so good, I said ‘this is for me.’ ”</SPAN>
