  • Since I have been in country a few months there have been some changes in Afghanistan...They weren't doing any of this the last time I was here back in 2003-04.

    1. The people are voting in elections
    2. Girls get to go to school
    3. In some parts of the country women do not wear the burqa
    4. In some areas boys and girls go to school together
    5. The Afghan military and police forces are taking charge of their own security.
    6. Men can cut their beards if they want to, before they couldn't.
    7. Afghan women are now in the Afghan military and police force.
    8. Not all, but there are villagers are taking their villages back from the Taliban, by force.
    9. There is now an Afghan Air Force.
    10. There is a sense of pride I can see the People here.

Got a long way to go of course...it ain't over, till its over.

Once they can take over the security, I will have to find another line of work...Somalia is still all screwed up...and Africa in general is a dangerous place..mebbe after this, head down south....

                            • hey nsb, just out of curiosity, because i have read about the schools (for boys and girls) that have been built both in afghanistan and pakistan by the mountain climber greg mortenson, have you seen any of these schools in your time over there?

any interesting stories happen over there lately?

                              stay sharp braveheart!

                              • Lot of the schools are built by the other nations, local gov., and I have heard of the Mortensen guy, but no, have not seen any schools or even seen him. Have seen the progress though...its good the kids are in school. That is one of the big priorities of not just the locals, but ours as well. Education...they need it here.

We had a suicide attack the other day. He got mostly locals...its hard to catch these guys when they wear the vests under their robes.

We have the standard 6 ft. fence in the backyard, and a few months ago, I heard about burglaries increasing dramatically in the entire city. To make sure this never happened to me, I got an electric fence and ran a single wire along the top of the fence.
