US soldier captured in Afghanistan
Militants are believed to have captured an American soldier in Afghanistan, the United States military said.
"A US soldier who has been missing since June 30 from his assigned unit is believed to have been captured by militant forces," US military spokeswoman Captain Elizabeth Mathias said.
"We are using all of our available resources to find him and provide for his safe return."
She could not provide details, including the province where the soldier went missing.
"We are not providing further details to protect the soldier's situation and well-being," she said.
A commander of the Taliban's hardline Haqqani faction claimed that his militia had captured the soldier.
"One of our commanders named Mawlawi Sangin has captured a coalition soldier along with his three Afghan guards in Yousuf Khail district of Paktika province," the commander, named only Bahram, said.
It was believed to be the first such case in Afghanistan since US troops were deployed to oust the Taliban regime in 2001.
Captain Mathias could not confirm this, but said it was believed to be the first time an American soldier had been captured in two to three years in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
When I was in Afghanistan, we always went out the wire with more than 150 soldiers at least. I can't believe how stupid this soldier was to go out with only a few Afghan guards. Not sure if he was Special Forces soldier or what, but I remember when the soldiers were captured in Iraq in 2006 and we stopped our own missions and started looking for them. We found them, and they were all killed. I hope this soldier escapes, but he will be guarded at all times by the Taliban and they will more then likey kill him and post it online for the whole world too see.
