i'm cherokee native american from Alabama all the powwows I've been to when we have grand entry the mc request that no pictures are taken at this time I've seen some vets leave the circle go to a visitor that was not listening and either take the film out of the camera and distroyed it or in case fo a digital camera delete all the pictures. One mohican that lived in Alabama for a good while a friend of mine was arena director for my tribes powwow a few years ago before he moved back north he took a camera from a person taking pictures during a grand entry and crushed it against a telephone pole after we warned the gentelmen several times but would not listen. Does any body say diffrent from the "SEC South East Cherokees"

    Ummm yeah

    Thats a bit drastic
Here in Oklahoma shutterbugs snap away and AD's will only get on them when they are trying to get out in the arena during a contest...
You ask permission when its an individual that you want to pose for you
But as for taking pictures of Grand entry I have many!!
That AD would be buying me a camera!

        Shd,

Maybe the MC doesn't want anyone to take pictures of Alabama Cherokees???
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Seems very drastic to me. What if a deaf person was taking pics and didn't hear the announcement? If a particular pow wow feels that strongly against it, why not just post signs everywhere "no cameras allowed". Then the cameras aren't there at all, and if someone ignores it, well with all the signs, they have no excuse. In Texas & Oklahoma, it's been my experience that if you want pics, you just ask permission first.

Smashing the camera does sound a bit harsh. Here in the northeast, they say no pics taken during grand entry or flag/veteran songs, out of respect. Otherwise, you ask permission for a posed photo.

I have been to a few places where they requested no pictures during grand entry. But it is not the norm nationally.

As someone who lived in the southeast, I have to say that some of the way things are done down there is different from the rest of the country- not bad, not wrong, just different, and the same can be said of the northwest.

at powwow's I attend, it's mostly asked to refrain from photo taking during contests, and it's usually asked only no flash photos then. Grand entry is when I used to take most pictures before I started dancing, now I'm always in grand entry, so I don't get alot of photos anymore.

                      grand entry photos

The reason that we don't want pictures taken during grand entry is because the grand entry cerimony is sacred I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings but taking pics during grand entry is like desicrating our traditions and in this day and age tradition what few traditions we have left is a precious symbol of our people not just cherokee but all native americans

                          Haverhill powwow

This past weekend I went to the annual Chief Red Blanket Memorial Powwow in Haverhill, Mass. This is my third year attending, and this is the first time the MC said we could take pics during grand entry. I didn't cause I was eatin' lunch. After the flag and veterans songs, the MC said we could take pics. There were two older gentlemen there in full regalia that were really tearing it up in the circle! They had quite a few people come up to them and ask if they could take their pictures. They seemed to get a kick out of it.

ummm, no....let me try to be as gentle as I can. Powwow's themselves are not sacred, they're social gatherings mostly. Next thing you'll tell me is contest dancing for money is sacred. Grand entry, as I understand it, came out of wild west shows, for all the participants to parade into the arena. Powwow isn't even part of Cherokee, if you want ceremonial, go to Green Corn. I don't mean to be cutting you down, but that was a silly statement, what else have you guys over there made up??......

                                Let's Talk GRAND ENTRYS
                                by WhoMe
Grand Entrys are a normal part of most powwows today. Yet, most powwows did not have grand entrys 40 years ago. They were adapted by most powwows in North America and have since become the norm.

Where did they begin? Why was it readily accepted?

                                Some say they were adapted...

Around here, spectators that come to powwows, both contest and non, like to take pictures of dancers, even though they often do not know any of us dancers. The MC is good as he tells the people exactally when it is appropriate to take pictures and this is enforced.
                                Still, I don't particuarly...

Wow, this website is really confusing...anyways, i wanted to post a new thread on this picture taking topic. lately i have been finding websites where spectators or professional photographers are taking pictures of dancers at the powwows and then selling them somehow, online. i do not agree with this....

I'm getting such good advice on my other thread that I thought I'd start a new one with two other questions I have.

I've seen any number of posts in various threads concerning spectators taking pictures at powwows. I would, for the most part, never take a picture of any INDIVIDUAL...

Hello, was at chamber's farm last night for a so called pow-wow.
In my opinion, they needed to call it a white man trying to have a Native American gathering. sevral of the dancers were walking across the circle with food and drinks, just so they didn't have to go around the circle. they had people...
