Hi, new spectator member to the forums. My wife and I are celebrating our 25th anniversary next year and we want to take a trip without the kids. We never had a honeymoon when we married due to being "dirt poor" lol. My question is this: what is the best/biggest/well attended powwow within a four hours drive from northcentral PA? I know the eastern powwows tend not to be as "big" as most of the western US, at least as far as I've seen. However we want to make this a 3-4 day trip and we cannot pay to fly this year. We like the opportunity to watch the dances obviously, listen to the drumming, and also shop for native made crafts, etc. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! THANKS, Jeff

You could also look at the Hamilton Ontario Pow Wow in Nov. It's indoors. http://www.canab.com/ In the summer, there's the Grand River Pow Wow for the folks at Six Nations. It's near Brantford, Ontario http://grpowwow.com/geninfo.htmlA human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. If you are planning to go to a Powwow in the US during the summer you can check out the one in Salamanca, NY http://www.senecapowwow.org/current/index.html It's put on by the Seneca.
You can also check out the powwow at the Mohegan Sun casino in CT in August: http://www.mohegan.nsn.us/pressroom/eventInfo.aspxCERN may have discovered the Higgs Boson but...

Don't let these elitists drive you crazy. I won't drive more than 2 hours from Pittsburgh and me and the kid spend about 8 weekends per year at Powwows. And we have a great time. A lot of people work their butts off for free to put on these things. You have to camp with everybody, that's half the fun. Look up De-Un-Da-Ga, up by Franklin PA. (Memorial Day) They try to put on a more Western style of Powwow. Don't worry about cooking there, they have a food tent that's cheap and great. As long as you're not counting trans-fat. I work on Thunder Mountain's festival. (August) Well organized, always something to do. Don't be shy, dance and talk to people. Everybody's nice at Powwows. It's the law!

While there are some elitists here on this site I don't think anyone above was being elitist here. He asked whats the biggest, best and well attended powwow with a 4 hour drive of North Central PA. The answers given were great, because he can get exactly what he wants. The simple truth is that powwows in PA don't offer that. No one is bashing them on this thread, at least thats the way I see it.
The other thing you won't find a lot of in PA re "Native-made" crafts, and by that I mean by those who are carded and upon request can prove it or at least a certificate of authenticity if they are reselling something that a carded tribal member made. If someone says that an object they are selling is "Native-made" and cannot furnish the tribal ID card or a certificate of authenticity by the original native artist then they are breaking the law. If you are not a carded member of a federally or state recognized tribe then you cannot sell your crafts as "Native-made", even if you have native blood in you. The law is in place to protect native artisans from frauds. More info on the law can be found here: http://www.iacb.doi.gov/act.htmlCERN may have discovered the Higgs Boson but...

by Lakota WiyanRecently, my family and I attended a powwow here in Rapid City, and just about went BROKE! Even the admission alone put us back over $100.00 for the weekend. Even my four year old, who slept most of the evening sessions, had to pay $9.75 for the weekend.
