  • Need help organizing an Exhibition Pow-Wow in my town

Hi, this is MaileenasDad. I forgot my password, 'scratches head'.

I recently moved to Nederland Colorado. It is a very progressive and open community. They are ultra mellow and not bigoted at all. I'm probably like one of less than 5 Indians in the whole area.

I want to put on an Exhibition Pow-Wow to share our culture with this great community. Our people would be welcomed in town.

So if any of you have any info about how to put something like this together, please let me know. I am also going to talk to the community leaders as well. It's not like I can just have a bunch of crazy Indians show up and dance one night, lol!

So please anyone out there in Indian Country, please help an old friend.

    Miigwech,

    MaileenasDad

Locate an MC who is willing to explain some of the dancing going on or you can get a singer/singers to explain....get some dancers preferably one or two of each style of dancing. You can look for volunteers or expect to pay each dancer/singer. Depending on your allotted time schedule, each category can showcase their style of dancing or you can throw jingle/fancy shawl in one song. It depends on time allowed. Sorry, I'm in a hurry now. I hope you can make sense of what I'm getting at.

Outdoors or Indoors; day or evening.

Outdoors? Inclimate weather site/date and advance permission to use site if weather does not cooperate.

Auto parking issues. Parking attendants? Traffic cones, vests, flashlights. Signage

          Standing or seated viewing?

Seated – Bleacher / Bring your sand chair/beach chair/on the grass

Permits required to ‘use’ public area – ask in advance. Restrictions if any. Liability (if any). Notify EMS of date, time, activity

Advertise – City web-site; Chamber of Commerce newsletter; Economic Development flyer (just be sure to use colored paper with contrasting print). Remember – Who, What, Where, When, and (Why).

PA equipment and related electrical resources; duck tape to secure ground cables; sub-dued background music playing 30 minutes before start of exhibition.

Go to the local Coca-Cola / Pepsi distributor and ask if you can acquire two logo blank banners (one for each end of town – layout large wording with MS Publisher/Adobe Pagemaker – transfer to blank(s). Make it look professional. Ask sign shop in town for assistance...

Changing area / restrooms for dancers, drum group

Bottled water / beverage for MC, dancers and drum group

Two other people who are on board with organizing, conducting and cleanup of site

Too much information? Delete what you’re not going to need. Better to be prepared than not.

On the Bold Statement, I really don't know what an "Exhibition" for a Powwow should be demonstrate.

But when I look at alumphfres and ac_miss mentioned about the Powwows which is really tradition Powwows (no contest) unless you are referring to Competition Powwows like contest. Is it?

That is exactly what Powwows should put on by description from alumphfres and ac_miss. That is the way to go on there.

Aaah, now I understand what was that about. Okay, so MAILEENASAGEDAD want to put "Powwow" performance on other places like you said instead of the Powwows ground.

                      Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has info on recipes for beef soup and frybread to feed 200-300 people at an outdoor powwow? Hello all,

I'm new to this site and relatively new to pow wows in general. I'm an amateur photographer with an interest in the southwest and the historical sites and cultures within the region. A couple years ago I attended my first pow wow in Malibu, California and was very moved by...

Is powwow music and dance hard to understand?
                      by WhoMe
I'm a Native singer and dancer. I have grown up around the drum and in the powwow arena. I have an ear for good powwow music and eye for good dancing. I am asked to judge both categories when I attend powwows.

I also perform and have traveled worldwide sharing Native culture in over 40...

I plan on dancing Men's Northern Traditional next year in honor of my mother who passed away this past May and to honor my ancestors. I was wondering about a few things that I hope some of you out there could help me out with. You know the old saying: no question is a dumb question? Please keep that...
