  • What is the future of Powwows

With the price of gas rising the way it is, what do you all think will happen to our local Powwows?

I am concerned for our local Powwows possibly having to cancel out. Our dance won't cancel this year, but I am concerned about those that have traveled many miles to come help us out may not be able to afford the gas to come this year. I don't forsee the price of gas going down very much if at all.

What are the feelings of some of the rest of you and the other Powwow committees.

We had to cancel our dance this year. Not because of gas prices but because grants and other governmental support has dried up. With all the budget problems in state and local governments, we can't get the money like we used to.

I'm more concerned woth the price of fuel. How long can NDN families tow a travel trailer or motorhome to a Powwow. How far is going to be too far to travel these days.

I pray that the fuel prices will go down some instead of going to $2.50/gal here in the true mid-west. WE have a few dances that we WILL go to but not sure of the rest.

I'm conerned for the smaller family sponsored dances that rely on the NDN families that travel a ways to help out.

Folks are going to Powwow regardless.....

Yes the price of fuel is getting ridiculous, but people are going to get there....

It would be nice to see Powwows Circle back to the way things used to be....If you Powwowed then you'll know what I mean.....

You know I can remember going to a dance it would last several days. We would camp in a tent or lodge, later on. We didn't know much different, though we would get wet now and then. We would even stay with other family members when we could. Car trips were different then. Now days we don't car pool the same way, though we will still stay with family or use our camper.

We'd take off on a Wednesday and head back home a week later, or even a month later....About 20 kids in a van....Then someone was always MIA....Better yet we'd take hostages back to da Rez.....OH! Counting Coup!

                for real

yah for sure the gas has gone up ,and for the powwow groups that are still in high school will have to do more now that the gas has gone up when they travel alot like us. We have to plan it out money wise and all. so we might ask our parents to help out with the mony , some of us have jobs and that helps with the money , then we get to our destination and just have alot of fun at the powwow and say it was well worth it,
                whazz up!

I guess we'll have lots of balognia sandwiches again, just like years ago on those road trips.

Road trip. Pull our money together and go. Money was tight in the mid '70s when gas went to $.40 and then $.45/gal.

I hope things work out. We travel to McAllen TX from mid MO in Oct. and our friends and family come north from McAllen in July for our dance in Sedalia MO. This has become important for us, my wife is Lipan Apache. This is her people and families.

                      Misser of the powwows

Goot question! I live in Arkansas and all the powwows near me are in Oklahoma and Missouri, so the way the gas prices are AND tolls I can't afford to travel!!! Aye! Plus I'm no longer working (Looking for a new job) So there's no Recreation money... DANG!

Siouxper lady: this is what i'm getting at. Several families are in the same dance with you. Many Families live many hours af travel from most dances. We travel several hours to most of our dances we go to.

Good luck to you Sioux lady and pray you back to work soon. Don't stop on the Powwow trail.

                            Dancer's Stlye

Yo, I was talking to a couple of people at a powwow a few weekends before this new regelia came out. I am not too sure what dancer's Category would fall under, may be it's own. You would easy notice the new regelia from the head dress. This style should be new to on looks, hope too see more dancers pick up the outfit.

I dont know, powwows do seem smaller. I think alot of people going to college and working fulltime

plays a part. Props who go to school, and work and still make it to powwows on time

As a sound contractor and recording studio that specializes in our Native people, I have noticed a large decline in attendance at powwows. Fewer drums, fewer dancers, fewer vendors and fewer spectators seem to be the norm this year. I have also noticed many powwows that have been around for years are...

I've been in the military now for a little over 2 years and i find it hard to go to powwows that are out of state. The mentality around here is, "Country first...
