  • Seeking Head Staff for Powwow

We are working on putting a powwow together for either Labor Day or Memorial weekend 2013 or 2014. It will be held at the 4T Arena in Bridgeport, West Virginia.

The facilies and grounds are excellent for an event such as a powwow. There is both an indoor and outdoor arena to utilize so weather will not be a major factor. Our facilities also boast a great layout for vendors to set up and a short walk from parking to the arena for spectators.

We have held a world championship series rodeo in this location for 20 years now sponsored by Ram Trucks. The rodeo is always well attended over the 3 days we hold it with nearly 10,000 in attendance during this time.

Because of our connections with the local media and various other sponsors we feel this would be a great event to bring to North-Central West Virginia for both educational and entertainment purposes.

We are looking for a group to bring in the staff & flags during Grand Entry, as well as potential head dancers, emcees and an arena director. We are also looking for a host drum.

We are considering making this a competition powwow and may be looking for possible judges for dance and drum if we decide to go that route.

We are planning now so we have a good understanding of the budget needed to produce a quality event that will continue for years to come. If you can assist us in any way please let me know your travel needs, fees and any other pertainent information.

If you would like to submit your group or name for consideration please also include some of the past events you have been involved with as well as some references.

I think if you tell who "we" are you might get more responses. Nobody wants to suggest friends/family to work at a powwow where they don't know if it is legit or not.

      Who "WE" are...

This is an event that will be produced by the owners & operators of 4T Arena. It is currently not associated with any clubs, groups or associations outside of the areana itself.

This is a first for the Arena and "we" are looking into the possibilities of hosting this Powwow.

We most definately want reputable folks in the key positions to make this an great event. We also know to do that we need to compensate the staff, drums and dancers appropriately to show our appreciation. To do that we need to set a budget and some goals to make it happen.

We do not want this event to be put together wrong nor do we want to portray the wrong idea about Native Americans. Reaching out to this community seemed like the first logical step.

Don Greenfeather has been suggested as one to contact as a potential emcee- Any thoughts or references would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks, Riff

You'll need a minimum of $40,000 for contest dancing. Powwow should be free including parking. Find your sponsors now and don't forget to feed the dancers, singers and elders.

                Ravenh,

I guess this powwow didn't happen this year?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Labor Day 2013 is still out there, as well as all of 2014.

                      True.

But I'd have staff by now.

its easy to say your gonna put on a powwow, its the actual work people dont like doing. I think that when people for the first time put on a powwow they dont know what all the details are. lots of things to think about too like paying your head staff, i know i have and i know lots of people who have been asked to be on head staff and the committee doesnt want to pay them nothing. Everybody in here can say its not about the money. Its not but if you gotta take off work drive along ways take care of the people you asked to come help you, feed yourself and your family, even if you camp you still got to spend money.it gets expensive. So when you do get paid for bieng on head staff i think a lot of times its just covering what you spent for getting there...you diffently arent getting rich on it.

Another aspect to consider from a powwow committee is pride and tradition. It is traditional to take care of your invited guests particularly if you are the powwow host.

A long time ago and even today some powwows set up a lodge or open their homes to the guests they invite and feed them every meal. As a part of this invitation, they were given valuable gifts like robes, rifles, feathers and cooking utensils. In today's terms, if an invited visitor or head staff came from a long ways, they should get food, lodging, travel and honorarium.

Committees that are putting on powwows for the first time should seek advice of someone who has knowledge of what it takes to put one on. I don't think too much of committees that don't take care of their invited visitors. I understand some powwows are held as benefits but otherwise "why have a powwow if you can't afford it?"

Alot of emphasis has been placed on individuals and contests here on powwows.com. Top dancers and drums have certain expectations that they require in agreeing to be on the head staff. Expenses, hotels, food, tranportation are some of these considerations.

On the other side of the coin......
