Princess-Royalty Expectations

Just curious - what are the expectations for princesses/royalty? We have all seen "royalty" at the powwows. Is there something that you really like that they do or don't do? I don't know if there are different ideas for different Tribes/powwows, but I'm curious what people think. If you could give some "advice" to a princess/queen/royalty, what would it be? Thank you!

speak your own language fluently and deliver welcome addresses spontaneously, not canned speeches in a slurred voice.

If you are selected as an ambassador of your tribe or organization:

• Be the first person there and the last one to leave at a pow wow or tribal function.
• Know tribal traditions and customs.
• Be presentable and respectful to everyone you encounter or meet.
• Be on your best behavior at all times. There are girls who see you as a role model, so set a good example.

These are at the top of my head at the moment. I'm sure more will come to me, but this is a general idea. Take or leave it.

I don't know what with you about "royalty".

It is like the same for Miss America or Miss Universe for contest for a reason. In the competition contest for best dancers and best drummers, they had to set up for Miss Indian for just only the contest to represent as the Ambassador to teach and speak on behalf of the tribes in Indian Country.

In real life, there is no such thing as Princess of the Chief. If the Chief have a daughter(s), she is just a daughter to him only, not princess. Everybody assume there is royalty like the Queen and King in United Kingdom (England and Scotland). This is totally different.

There was a real royalty for Queen or King back in the old days in Hawaii, probably in Honolulu, Hawaii. They don't have that anymore. The Whites changed that.

- wearing the banner.....I see a lot of girls who are princes just wear the banner in to grand entry and then as soon as the GE is over - off goes the banner and in the back with the boys or trying to run after a boy. I might be old school - but when I was powwow princess - I had to be first person in the grand entry waiting area - crown and banner - then the crown came off but the banner never came off. Only time I didn't wear it was for contest. Otherwise I wore that banner all the time. Because you are princess for the powwow/organization all the time - not just at grand entry. I had to be available for the organizations fundraisers - their dance performances - and any powwow they wanted me to be at in particular.

Two things I think our current ESID princess/queen is doing right - smiling and inviting everyone to the powwow that she is representing.

And she's not slurring, but talking a little fast..but then she gets a lot of words in during a short time :)

this post made me miss my mom....she was the chair for denver march princess commitee from the late 70s to early 90s

she would probably wrap all the above advice into one word.....BEHAVE!!!
