  • Boy Scout Chicken Dance

Hi everyone, I'm going to start of by saying that I am a Boy Scout and that I am in the Order of the Arrow. I know that many people on this site do not like the fact that Boy Scouts are doing Native American Dances. I would also like to say that I am respectful and always willing to learn so that I may correctly portray your culture.
I have been to many powwows, danced Northern Traditional for three years, and have a strong passion for Native American Culture. I would like to learn how to properly dance the Chicken Dance Style. I would like to learn how to do this dance properly and respectfully so that I will not be disrespectful. I was wondering if anyone on this site would be willing to help me learn how to properly dance Chicken Dance style?

I take it that you will do this no matter what anyone on here says about it. So I might as well put in my 2 cents to make sure it gets done right......You said you've been dancing at pow wows for 3 years so you have HAD to run across a chicken dancer. Just ask them. There is no better of a teacher than someone who has actually done it that can physically show you and teach you proper ways of something. Just like any other style, including Northern Tradish, there is more to the dance than just tapping your foot to the drum.

I am glad that you put the video of the Chicken Dance Powwows in Alberta. I can read with close captioned so I could understand what Natives said about their Chicken Dance Powwows.

I never thought about it before til I read it on here.

IS IT WRONG FOR SOMEONE FROM ANOTHER TRIBE TO DANCE A DIFFERENT STYLE FROM THEIR OWN?

I know Northern people who dance Southern style and vice a versa. Is it wrong? I hope not.

My husband is Lakota, he was never taught to dance and none of his family are dancers, but he wants to dance and he wants our daughter to dance someday too. Problem is, we're off the reservation, like 1700 miles away lol and his only chance of possibly learning to dance has ignored his emails. ...

So I'm new to this site. Saw someone last weekend at the Chickahominy powwow with a T-Shirt on and decided to check it out. It's pretty cool! There are a lot of knowledgable people on here. There are a few wackos on here too but I guess that's a topic for another thread.

Just wondering what styles everyone dances? Old style or more of the contem moves? I know different nations have different moves that they take credit for or usually dance a certain way. I'm starting to learn the different moves and being able to place the moves with different nations. I have a guy...
