  • Who's name comes to mind when you think of Men's Fancy?

The men's fancy dance originated with the Ponca tribe in the early 1900's. Since that time there have been many great fancy dancers both in the past and present.

    Anyways,

Who comes to your mind when you think of Men's Fancy Dancing?

(I predict the answers that are posted will depend on the replyers age and location.)

The first Northern fancy dancer that comes to mind is Chico Her-Many-Horses. In his day he had the moves, the outfits, and the competitivness. That whole family can dance. Enjoyed watchin him kick it again at Denver March years back during a fancy dance special. The next person that comes to mind in Northern is Nate Thompson.

The first Southern fancy dancer that comes to mind is Joe Bointy. Outfits are always original, CLEAN looking, never a busted bead or bustle spike, and the guy was faaaaaaaaast. Plus the guy has longevity. Still kickin it and is competitive. Must take good care of himself to stay injury-free and in shape.

Nowadayz the Northern dancer that comes to mind is Larry Yazzie. He has it all. Complete coordinated sets of beadwork and bustles, always has repairs made, and is in great shape. Plus he's not a "flapper" or just a "spinner". He has alot of footwork and has that longevity.

It's hard to think of a current southern fancy dancer that has all the elements. One that is popular and gets named alot doesn't keep time real well (why doesn't anyone notice that but me?????), and the rest of the current winners either don't have complete outfits (beaded capes and cloth aprons-not hard to be fast with a lightweight outfit, no belt, duct tape on their mocs), or don't stay in shape very well, or just arent what I think is Southern.

There are a bunch fo champs and they all have there own great qualities. These are just my ops and what comes to my mind first.

Boye Ladd (Ho Chunk, Zuni) First fancy dancer to travel to Canada. Introduced Russian kicks to fancy dance.

One name comes to mind in addition to others

              Boozhoo niji,

I remembera post in a thread where someone said they knew a fancy dancer that beaded his bustle extenders. I know some one that did that, and he is also the oldest man I know of still fancy dancing. I believe his name is Darrel Whitehorse, i see him frequently down here in Florida at Chambers pow wow, and every extender on his bustle is peyote stitched 4 inches, took him 2 years to complete. I believe he said he was in his late 60s, early 70s. I have learned a lot of good things from this man.

                              Master

Joe Bointy is it. Southern all the way. Of course back then he went capeless and only a beaded arm band with a feather, not feathers, feather hanging from it along with his apron leggings and kerchief and beaded cuffs.

I have been dancing since I was about 13 yrs old, although didn't really get into the circuit until several years ago. During that time I have noticed a decreased interest in fancy... is it just me? Most of my younger female relatives, who do not dance, said that they would be interested in traditional...

Many dance categories now have two divisions: a contemporary and original. These include the Jingle dress, men's traditional and grass dance competitions.

It is my opinion "the northern and southern categories of fancy dance are becoming less and less distinguishable as separate...
