It's a feather crest, hence the title of the thread. They were big in the 40s/50s in certain places, primarily in OK. Made in a similar way as a back bustle, out of spikes with added decorations.

I'm game, Got some extra supplies.
You got some info on how to rig it up?
IT appears they have the roach sitting inside them.

No roach on the inside, but the base of it is the spreader, they are built together, it is one thing. I've stuck my head inside of several of these, I'll dig out some more pics tomorrow.

I got a close look at some ol' skool feathered crests. One belonging to Garland Kent Sr. and one belonging to Dixon Palmer. Both of theirs were a lot taller and bigger than today's retro imitations.

It must have taken a lot of skill to balance them during a fast song.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Here's a pic of Dennis Begay (Navajo), rocking the feather crest. He lives somewhere around Dallas, Texas. I believe it's his original one. He still dances the old style fancy with old style regalia. He learned the dance style from dancing w/Dixon & Gus Palmer. Kinda of a fuzzy pic, but you get the idea.

I've been following the thread started by the poster who found a dead owl on the road and it prompted a question in my mind. What happens when tribal beliefs collide in the circle, when a dancer from one nation wears something that is acceptable to his nation but unacceptable to others? They are sharing...

                                Osage Bustles
                                by WhoMe
I just saw two tail bustles that were labeled - Osage.

They both looked like Crow bustles. It is said the Osage (Wahzhazhe) had the man dance Ilonska before it was reintroduced to them by the Kaw and Ponca.

I wonder if these bustles were used in "pre-history?"...

                                by Steffan Redhawk
I'll be getting another bird in the next few weeks, and I'll be adding an inside, and outside row to my bustle (I currently have 1 row, 52 feathers, I'm thinking about breaking that down to about 40 feathers, and creating a "dish" style on the inside) then using the new golden (immature, still)...

Does anyone use Inkle Looms for weaving sashes/garters for pow-wow regalia? I know it's not as nice as fingerweaving, but how accepted is it as an alternative? I've been seeing them quite often on Voyageur and French & Indian War reenactors.
