  • Hackles in Fancy Bustle

I am looking for input on how many hackles you attach per base feather per row. I am building a set for my son (9) and I have three rows above the fletching and one row at the base of fletching. I have 32 base feathers in each bustle.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

There's a very good thread here called "Bustle Construction". Covers just about everything. Good luck.

Thanks, I've been through just about every thread on this site and general searches on the web but nobody talks about hackle count.
I have built three other sets of bustles but that was in the 80s and am looking to update or to see if there is some magic number.
When I built mine I used around 60 hackles per wrap. 3 wraps above fletching and 1 below. Is this still about what being done now?
      Thanks

I ,personally, dont count hackles per wrap. I did that once. Stripped all the hackle quills. LAid them all backdown on tape, then onto the spikes. Never liked it,some folks do.
Now,I divide the total spikes by the total inches of sewn hackle I have. Then I have a set amount(ex.1.2 inches) for each spike, Cut, Clean the excess fluff, and wrap.
You need to get a feel for how much is gonna work for you.
If you set on counting Hackles, Grab a bunch of loose hacks & a spike start adding them holding them between your index&thumb at the wrap location. Keep adding until you get a full enuf look that you are satisfied.
Beware, you may run out of hackles if you estimate wrong. Or you can count your total number of Hackles!

          because I care .......

          roughly speaking, 6-7" hackles:
400 per ounce, or if you buy by the yard, 2.5 ounces per yard (or 1000 per yard)

Here's a pic of the set I just finished, did some tweaking since the pic was taken, replaced two spikes on our left side that were crooked. 3 rows on the outside, 1 row on inside, 25 hackles per color per row, so

40 spikes per bustle (I'm excluding the accent colors in this example), 80 total, these #'s are for 2 bustles

          white row 80 spikes x 25= 2000
          lt orange row 80 spikes x 25= 2000
          white row 80 spikes x 25= 2000
          lt blue row 80 spikes x 25= 2000

8000 hackles for this SET of bustles
          4000 white (10 oz)
          2000 lt orange (5 oz)
          2000 lt blue (5 oz)

that doesn't not include materials for matching armbustles.

Thanks for the input. I believe I am going to try around 30 hackles per wrap and see how that looks.
I like coming to this sight for information, usually someone responds with usable or informative info.
            Thanks again to all.
I will try to post a pic when done.
