  • Pheasant Feathered Bustle

I just saw a pheasant feathered bustle at an Oklahoma powwow. I haven't seen one of those since the late great fancy dancer, Elmer Brown was alive. Pheasants are not Native to the Americas and were imported from China.

It's good to see this bustle style make a come back into the arena!
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Good time of year for it - they're just getting nervy over here in Minnesota, lots of 'em wind up taking a permanent nap on the side of the road.

Ok if you have seen the thread "let's talk roaches" I want to create a similar thread about bustles!

What region did the bustle originate from?

What tribe(s) originally wore the bustle?

Who was allowed to wear a bustle?

              What...

What does everybody keep their bustles in when not in use or traveling to a dance?

I have seen some fancy wood octagnal feather boxes and some metal trash can lookin things. What do you use?

              Traditional Owl Feathers
              by WhoMe
A friend of mine asked me to help him update his traditional dance rig.

I asked him to show me what he had.

He showed me some old bells worn on the side, Hudson Bay blanket leggins, a few other odds and ends and an old bunch bustle made from both hawk and owl feathers....

              new bustle
              by sookout sh'nob
I'm making a new bustle set - two outer rows and no extenders. I've never made this style (no extenders), and I'm wondering if anyone on this board has made a fancy bustle without dowel extenders before and how many spikes they used? I'm trying to ball park my materials here.
