    contest points vs. dancing

POINTS SHOULD NEVER BE A REASON TO DANCE- IF YOU DANCE FOR PONTS- THAT IS WHAT YOU GET- NOT THE JOY OF THE DANCE OR THE HAPPINESS THAT YOUR DANCE BRINGS TO OTHERS-- IE: NAVAJO SAYS- IF YOU DANCE FOR POINTS AND MONEY CREATOR WILL NOT LET YOU WIN- DANCE IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO OFFER A GIFT TO OTHERS.

I'm not against contest dancing either. But I don't think contests should be the sole reason for dancing. I really enjoy exhibition dancing. Not only for fancy dancers, but watching all categories. It really gives dancers a chance to show what they have with no contest pressure.

On the other hand, for those who travel, pow wows get very expensive. Contest and day money definitely helps with the cost.

It's always interesting to hear people's views on this topic. Especially given the current trends in outfits for many dance styles, including fancy. As mentioned in the straight dance and traditional dance topics, outfits today are changing rapidly due to the popularity of contest dancing.

      Just my thoughts.

        Today is early in 2006.

That said...I've been reading previous posts on other forums about dances.

        Competition dances.

Hate. Discontent. Who made more points. Who was related to whom. Who was picked, who was not.

        What a setup for failure....

        Successful Contest Tabulation Strategies?
        by Str8Dancer49
Ok, considering all of the drama associated w/ the tabluation @ Sycuan, and that other dance w/ the jacked up drum contest w/ an 8-way tie, and some other goofy stuff I heard about people winning in like 3 different categories at a dance in central TX.........

Why don't we all post contest...

        by Historian
Would you say that there is now a distinct sub-division within the Straight Dance Style?

        Traditional Straight Dance?

        Contemporary Straight Dance?

who does NOT contest dance?? hihi! I am a jingle dress dancer, who dances primarily for healing purposes, and considers herself to be very traditional. I personally believe the dress to be very powerful, and to contain an unmeasureable amount of healing power. I occasionally will attend a powwow, but...

Contest powwow dance styles - your thoughts?

I'm working on this presentation for a graduate school seminar, and my paper is about contest powwow dancing styles.
Do any of you have any thoughts about which - besides the main categories - should be included?

Also, what about the idea that powwows have kind of...
