  • Gourd topping

    I own three gourds.

One has horse hair and beads on top. The other two have exotic bird feathers on top.

I was wondering if anybody knows why gourds used for gourd dancing are "topped off" with these two items?

I have a theory that the horse hair is related to the NAC gourd and/or related to the horse hair on top of bows.

    How is your gourd topped?

    Is this personal preference?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

My metal gourd rattle has horse hair, but I am seeing more and more of the exotic bird feathers, mostly from Kiowa dancers, but not exclusively. I like the way horse hair waves about as the rattle is shook, and just the way it looks, but the feathers are nice too. I was under the impression hair was more "traditional", but maybe not.

      I have had both
My first Gourd when I was 20 or so had flicker feathers
Years later I use Horse hair and yes I think that horse hair has roots in the NAC...
My Stepfather uses his gourd at both
When he gave me one of his Gourds I used the handle because it is carved out of ebony and very light with a small can and topped with horse hair
I occasionally have to straighten and found one of those hair staighten things that women use works very well for my Gourd

But i have been told that the feathers do have meaning but never followed up to discover what...

I have my gourd that has horse hair and threadwork.

Just started working on my tin, have been thinking of toping it off with some exotic feathers as well.

Mine is topped with horse hair, but I have some small eagle feathers i've put to the side and am going to eventually put on it. If I ever find some time. I think it comes down to personal preference...but thats just one opinion...kio-manche
