Hey Josiah, I used to use deer legs for handles, taking the marrow out and then drying it and then cutting the groove for the feathers to hold in place.
I found that it was easier to use wolf legs, I can get most of the bones out and then I have a nice hollow sleeve that is easy and fast to dry!
Darn thing is once I start using the fan, along comes someone that wants it, so I need to make a new one! Now I have just this wee fan and it is toooooooo humble for the average person and that is fine by me!

I have a loose feather fan, wings and a flat fan. IF, I'm outside and it is hot to very hot I will use my wing to help stay cool when I fan myself. Inside dances I may use my loose fan or the flat fan if it gets warm inside.

Now that is something I have never seen at a Gourd Dance

My favorite fan is the right wing tip of a red tail hawk that I found on the road, the rest of the bird was no where to be seen! I looked for about 15 minutes up and down the road, so it must have stuck to the grill of a rig and fallen off!
I mounted this wing tip on the left leg of a young wolf. No other decoration on it at all, plain and simple, very light too! I now make all my fans and shakers with wolf legs, skin minus all the bones! Looks different and eye catching.

As far as Gourd Dance is considered, do they have to be the loose style, or will a wing fan suffice?
I did my research and think my search function is not working.
Thanks for your input!
