  • Gourd Society in NC?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if there is a Gourd Society amongst the Eastern Band of Cherokee?

If not, does anyone know of any Gourd Dancers near the mountains of North Carolina? Any information in helping me to pull off a dance would be greatly appreciated.

To get a true picture of your purpose in life, you only get the whole picture when you listen with your mind, your ears and your heart. This way The Creator has a direct connection with you and only you...no outside interference.

When you follow the will of IT that created you, understanding that your purpose is not for you...but for IT and all that IT has created, there can be no wrong except failure to be obedient. Only then do we jeopardize the gifts we are given.

Its not the final destination that defines us, rather the journey taken!

I was talking to my bro a little while back about the Gourd dances in OK. He did tell me that there was something called a gourd dance in Cherokee but that it is a very different dance then the ones in OK and it's not really a society known in NC.

I'm supposed to be talking to my Uncle here today or tomorrow. I will ask him about it and let you know in a PM what he tells me. But I really don't think that there's one like the ones in OK. I've never heard of it before and he tells me about alot of the dances and societies there. Well, actually I know alot of the member's and they don't speak of it.

Didn't they just have gourd dancing at the Lumbee Powwow in NC?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

Oops, I meant in that 1st paragraph to say Cherokee not NC. I don't know about the whole state. I only know about many of the societies in Cherokee.

          No gourd society with EBCI......
There may be some gourd dances down around Lumerton and up in to Charlotte way, but gourd comes from a different tradition.

Gourd Dance Societies are for KIOWA's! I believe only 1 other tribe was given the right to have one. How many times will this be posted?
Yes, there was just a gourd dance on Saturday at Lumbee.
I also heard that a local Color Gaurd was trying to put a Society together and the members were EBC. This is probably what your talking about. Don't ask them! You know the drum that does all the gourd dancing around you area. Ask them or ask a Kiowa.

The Otoe Tribe is the only other tribe the Kiowa Gourd Clan has ever given permission to Gourd Dance.

There is no Gourd Society in Cherokee, but that was known before.

What the person I had talked to before was refering to was a type of social dance nothing like what is done in OK and is a totally different thing as I stated before. And as far as the my Uncle knows it's not done in Cherokee by all. He said that if it does exist it's based on the town, not all. And he doesn't live in the town that the reference was made about so it could be there, but not all over. And again, not anything like the ones in OK at all.

The Golden State Gourd Society was given permission by the Kiowa Gourd Clan, by then, President Taft Hainta.

Correct - but I was referring to a Tribe. If I am correct, the Golden State Org has several Gourd Clan members as officers and it follows the protocal of the Kiowa Gourd Clan.

There is a gourd dance at AICA every year. Most of the dancers are either in White Bear or White Star.

A dance I'm attending this weekend in Tennessee will have gourd dancing and one I attended last month in North Carolina had a gourd dancing session. Now, the one in NC was sung by knowledgeable singers who've sung out in OK and know the protocols, and I'm not sure who's singing for Gourd Dance this...

I know this has been eluded to many times in almost every thread going but I'm seeking thoughts about the Gourd vs the can. I personally have both. I understand the Gourd has a Church background, I too have a church gourd. I will use my Gourd at gourd dances. When did the can start to be used?

A veteran's group in my area recently formed a new gourd dance society.

One of the members does not think it is right because they are not from gourd dancing tribes and he believes that they do not know what they are doing. He has brought this to my attention.

Secret 'Tia Piah' and Powwow in Memphis?
                            by jeraldk
                            Kiowa's,

Have you heard of a Closed Gourd Dance and invitation only powwow in April here in Memphis. TN? Just heard about it and thought it was strange, especially in TN.

They pronounce it 'Tie Pay' here. Makes me assume if might be wannabee's putting it on.
