  • Roach questions

    Hey all'
I'm just looking for some input. I have a few ?s reguarding roaches.
    1. I noticed that the current trend seems to be longer is better. Is there a general consensus on prefered length for grass dancers?

    2. I'm just getting back to the trail after several years of not dancing regularly, and am focusing mainly on outfits for my 4 kids and my wife. Does anyone have sugestions on were I can get decent quality roaches at a fairly inexpensive price?
(I need to buy at least 1 for me as well as roaches for my 3 boys.)

    3. two of my boys are only 2 y.o.. do you think it would be acceptable to have them wear just deer hair? I think it would be more economical; as well as less likely to get messed up by them being so young. Any Ideas on this?

    4. I prefer the look of a smaller roach (my family is from the Ohio valley). Does anyone have an oppinion on possibly useing a round or tear drop roach?
This would be only for occasional use; just for a change. I also have a vest outfit that Has a design dedicated to all my fellow vets. I feel the small roach would detract from it less.

Any input or oppinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

24-28 inches seems to be the norm - someone chime in if I'm off the mark here. I'm strictly a tear drop/deer tail/round roach kinda guy.

Sorry bro, I can't think of anyone. In my mind, inexpensive and quality roach (even at just decent) are like oil and water.

Yes! My family does this with almost all of our kids - and not a few of the adults just wear the older deer tails - which especially rule for hoop dancing because they are so compact.

Do it. They look awesome and I have two of each. You're out less money if they get stolen too!

      thanks

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner.......military life can get busy. I realy appreciate your input. I've been pricing roaches and I see what you mean. Is there any specific way of shaping a deer tail you would recomend, and do you use a spreader on them? I've found some people who make round/teardrop roaches for about $150 is this an average price and is there anyone you would recomend. I ask because several roach makers I've contacted flat out said they won't make anything under 12 inches. I want the smaller roach style but not from someone who makes them just because they aren't skilled enough to make the larger ones.
Once again I thank you for your words and insight

        Smaller roaches

Keeler, I read your post and I've been looking everywhere in my "Favorites" for a "Trading Post" or "Craft Store" that I had marked at one time that specialized in the smaller Eastern Woodlands roach. I'd suggest doing a Google search. Hope that helps. Dance proud. Ron

If your good enough to make small round roaches, then your good enough to make long ones. The tying is the same, the only difference is the length of the hair and how long your line is. Otherwise besides the base, it's pretty much the same thing.

I just think most roach makers don't make em too much besides custom orders anymore. Harder to sell round roaches in most places since the longer roaches are in style. But most roach makers will do em, usually run 150-200 or so. Larry, powwowbum49, probably makes em.

            Question about smaller roaches
            by littleswan
Hello powwow.com forums! I was wondering if any of you are familiar with smaller roaches. The size of the base on the roach I am going to be getting is going to be anywhere between six to eight inches long.

That being said, does anyone know if I will have a problem with "spinning"...

            Comfortable roach ties?
            by Str8Dancer49
Hey all..... what do you guys use to tie on your roach?

I used to use the stick through the third braid, but recently switched to ties for 3 reasons - 1) too many years of abusin' my scalp lock is gettin me a bit thin up there, 2) I got a 3 year old son, and it's just faster to get everybody...

Okay, now this is going to sound silly or stupid to some of you. I've been Gourd dancing for about 20 years and now I'm getting into Straight dancing. After making most all my regalia myself I was ready to get a roach made to match my regalia. After a couple of years and ALOT of money ( I was scamed)...

            Roach attachment
            by Sonny Arm In Trout
I have never worn a roach before. I am wanting to know how to attach the roach to the head. I know that it can be done using 2 scalp locks held with pins, but what about the German silver spreaders. Tell mw how this works? How is the feather attached to the spreader and how does the spreader stay...
