  • Moccasin Soles

    Hello fellow dancers,

I'm in the process of making a pair of beaded moccasins and I was hoping to get some feedback about what to use for soles. What is the strongest yet most comfortable material to use? Thanks a lot.

If you are making hardsole mocs, I would use latigo. You can get it from Nocbay, CrazyCrow, etc. In sections for moc soles. Cheaper than buying a whole hide.
The things you are doing today are the traditions of twenty-five years from now.

      Agreed

      Right Spotted Eagle.

For any Plains Moccs or any Hard Soled Moccs that is the way to go. Latigo is good and thick and can even come in extra very thick slabs. It is great leather as it usually needs nothing done to it.

However, it can get rather slick after use and will eventually show wear and tear, and if you find yourself caught in alot of wet events you might feel it after awhile. To combat that I have used "Goop, Shoe Goo, and Gorilla Glue" to give me some traction and make it totally waterproof.

South Eastern Peoples use Soft Soled Moccs - but for events where the weather is not that great I have a back up pair of Soft Soled Moccs with a slab of Latigo as the Sole for extra protection.

Tanned mooshide from the shoulder area on an adult bull. Cow if bulls not available. Calf works ok too, but you could just as easily use belly or side ffrom and adult at that point.

I've had my mocs for 6 years, have danced on them near every weekend indoorsm, outdoors, on asphalt and basketball courts, in rain, in snow, or in shine... and they have no holes or thin spots in them whatsoever :D I did wear the liners out though.

Once you go moose you never go back!
