if your going for a real tradish look then you need eagle feathers on your roach and f you use a roach pin then you need eagle feathers on that to. i also sugest a fan. i would say bout 12 feathers on it andit can be turkey.

thanks for the help on that. I know that I'll use the wing feathers on the dance stick and epilets and everything else mentioned, but I dont know about the visor, if I am still going to stick with the full turkey (theme I guess). I may have to take down a smaller bird cause im not sure how a 10 inch long visor will look with an 18 inch roach (that I made myself). The end of my dance stick is the exact same size as a quarter (I dont know how I managed that on my lathe) so I will use some chains or something to attach the feathers to the end of it. On the epilets (shoulder feathers)would it be bettter to use wing or pointers? I dont know the number of pointers a turkey yeilds but im sure ill have alot left over and I dont need another fan at this point. the roach feathers will be easy. Everyone please keep on posting cause it is doing almost nothing but helping. also dose anyone know a way to strengthen, or stiffen feathers since I want to put an ungodly amount of ribbon on my bustle.

Originally posted by CherokeeScoutCBI have been wondering, in everybodys opinion, what is the amount of feathers needed to make a good full set I mean everything from roach to mocs. I have alot of turkeys where I live and just wanted to get an idea of how many wings I would need. Personally I dont like the tails and I can live without the beards so my hunter friends have less of a problem with geting me wings. so if someone could break down some better numbers for me and state whether you mean wings or pointers it could help
roach spreader feathers= 2
roach pin feathers= (# and what kind)
visor feathers= #
epilets (shoulder feathers)= # of pointers or wing feathers
bustle feathers= (friend made a 1 row bustle out of two wings)
(# inner row optional)
trailer feathers= #
dance stick feathers= #
sheild feathers (turtle shell)= #
and if im forgeting anything then just let me know or if u have anyother suggestions then let me know.
oh and im not but 5'6 so it may take a few less feathers on my shoulders
roach spreader feathers= 1 or 2 tail feather (Bald eagle)
roach pin feathers= I used small wing feathers, about 3 or 4 inches, i used 3 of them. I sewed them together, put electrical tape over it, for decoration.
visor feathers= You normally would want to use a whole tail. Like a full bald eage tail, or a full red tail hawk tail. You could probably use turkey, havent really worked with turkey feathers at all.
epilets (shoulder feathers)= i personally would use 7. depending on how big, 7 is a sacred number.
bustle feathers= 1 left wing and 1 right wing. And for inner roll, all i know is, bald eagle feathers, teh whole tail. Ur decision really.
trailer feathers= Don't personally use these, i dont even have a trailer, but u should use what you feel, i would use 3 on each side.
dance stick feathers= I used 7 Golden eagle, becuase onece again, 7 is a sacred number.
sheild feathers (turtle shell)= Depends on you really, i would prob put between 3-7.

good question,
But, I think i speak for everyone here when I say that all regalia's are different. And there are different amount of feathers used. Some people put feathers on their items and others don't. So, I don't think any one can tell you how many feathers you will use. Remember, your regalia represents YOU, you interpret for YOU. Just like some one wrote "like the styles of clothing today evolve over time, it is not a stagnant culture, but a vibrant and changing way of life." Your regalia is living. It will change over time and you will want to change it over time. Any more comments are greatly appreciated.
thx,
mike

hey,
Ok, what do you suggest for roach feathers? I am thinking about using two turkey tail feathers because I seen them in a dream that I had last night. All comments are greatly appreciated.
thanks,

I havent earned the right to use Eagle or hawk feathers, and all the turkey feathers I can find are only the common barred ones. Does anyone know of anywhere that I can find some good alternatives to the...

I just opened my big plastic feather box to pick out some feathers for a new fan. As I started going through the different prepared bunches, I noticed that a "critter" has eaten its way through my best feathers.
It must have been a connoiseur of feathers,...-
