I have a friend who is a Kalispel elder he wants magpie feathers and in his perspective and mine the magpie stands for wisdom. which agrees with the story and the directional meaning.

When I was back home in Oregon in 2005, my uncle pulled his magpie feathers from his hat and gave them to me for use in my husband and son's regalia, they are really pretty! I didn't even think to question him or the feathers, because when your given a gift, you just accept it with graciousness.

Hehe, I am Lakota, and yes, the magpie is very highly reguarded, mainly because, the bird did win the race, and cleverly we said, look they walk on two legs, so we claimed the victory.

One time I watched a magpie hide like food bits from a dog, it was fun to watch, made me realize how important they are, how clever they are, made me think of that one crazy magpie, riding the buffalo's shoulders right up to the end, sneaky little sucker, no?

Of course then you get into the spiritual aspects, and well that is just a whole different subject all together...

As far as I've heard,the magpie is held in pretty high regard by the Lakota and Northern Cheyennes.In one story They say it's because of the magpie that people stopped becoming food for the buffalo and became hunters by way of a race held in which the magpie,representing the people,cleverly won the race,so it's reward was that a rainbow was put in its tail,and humans hunted buffalo from here on out.I have some nice tail feathers,and when you hold them to the light,you can see all the colors in it.The magpie himself painted white under his wings,which is why all magpies have black and white wing feathers....something like that.Keep smilin'1

Im from the south and was given some magpie feathers from a friend up north. He got them from a friend out west. We dont have those birds here and I was wondering if anybody could tell me why these birds are respected out there. I want to know before I put then on my regalia.

I think the famous painting of Pehriska-Rupa (Hidatsa) https://www.allposters.com/-sp/Pehri...s_i375940_.htm - by Karl Bodmer, shows a headdress made of magpie, turkey tail feathers and a center eagle tail plume.

Also, I'm from the east. If you really cant' find any better answers and decide to donate your feathers that began their journey from the west, then north, then south ... once they came to me ...

They would make a full "sacred" circle!
