  • New bustle time!

New bustle time! I'll be posting photos and updates here, much like my fancy dance refurb post. First off, the ingredients!

    Big brown feathers
Short bundle of black horsehair (8 inches IIRC)
    Buffalo rawhide
    Artificial sinew
Beads (haven't decided on what kind yet)
    Gypsum paint
    Metal backed mirrors

I also have lots of red fluffs as well as some purple, dark green, and pink fluffs. Something may have to happen with some of those, but again, I'm undecided.

I'm going round, no feather extensions. Split trailer.

The next step is to gather everything up in the same room and see what takes shape!

The bustle is veering wildly towards prairie chicken... might have to move the thread :D I have a friend who has an eagle and wants a tradish bustle though, so maybe we'll put that one here instead.

In the meantime, check out Juaqin's tutorial
On this episode, Juaquin lays out the necessary elements for the construction of a small traditional bustle.

What does everybody keep their bustles in when not in use or traveling to a dance?

I have seen some fancy wood octagnal feather boxes and some metal trash can lookin things. What do you use?

Ok if you have seen the thread "let's talk roaches" I want to create a similar thread about bustles!

What region did the bustle originate from?

What tribe(s) originally wore the bustle?

Who was allowed to wear a bustle?

        What...

        new bustle
        by sookout sh'nob
I'm making a new bustle set - two outer rows and no extenders. I've never made this style (no extenders), and I'm wondering if anyone on this board has made a fancy bustle without dowel extenders before and how many spikes they used? I'm trying to ball park my materials here.
