  • Why?

Why did you choose Straight dancing over the other styles? What is it about this style that you prefer over the other styles?
Before you attempt to beat the odds, make sure you can survive the odds beating you!

Why do some people bother breathing when you know their brain isn't getting the oxygen?

It's the style the person who taught me danced and i'm glad about that because i doubt if i can do Fancy Dance flips (without breaking my neck), or Grass Dance Squats (and get back up), and wearing all those feathers on my waist would just make my butt look bigger. ;-D

Actually i enjoy the comradeship that i feel among the Straight Dancers, plus the style and grace.
(not to mention that we all know Straight Dancers snag all the cute ladies.)

    LOL.

I am still learning how this system works here at VG, and because of my ignorance right now I am unsure who the question of "Why?" is addressed to.
If it was me, the reason is because I didn't find out about my heritage until quite late in life and was unaware of the reasons that I had certain feelings. I chose Straight Dancing because it seemed the right thing to do at the time. I pray that I will honor the traditions and our people.:Angel2

TWDBear, Do you use a mirror board or a tail stick? Curious, that's all.

          Hi DesertHawk,

I initially started out dancing with a mirror board (which i still have to make sure my roach is on straight).

I usually dance with a tail stick that i was gifted to by another straight dancer, after a couple of years of dancing.

But these days many people who are dancing straight, use the dance sticks. They've lost the meaning and significance they once held.

I agree to your comment concerning the loss of importance, etc., of the tail stick. I am not sure I have the motivation to dance with one for a couple of reasons. One I am very self conscious about not being a part of the Tail Society to which this tail stick originates, and two I am not even this familiar with straight dancing as yet, since I am switching lanes at this point in my life.
My Mirror board has a total of ten 3/4" mirrors (five on each side). Do you think I'll be able to keep things straight?
            Later. Wado.:Angel2

I'm sure you can if you close your left eye and cock your head to the right. ;-D

I PREFER TO STRAIGHT DANCE BECAUSE THIS IS THE MOST GRACEFULL STYLE OF ALL OTHERS. WE (MY MALE FAMILY) ARE ALL STRAIGHT DANCERS EVENTHOUGH WE MAY HAVE DANCED OTHER STYLES AS WELL. OUR WAY OF LIFE IS (SHOULD) REFLECTED BY THIS STYLES MEANINGS. WE ARE THE VETERANS, THE FAMILY OVERSEERS AND PROTECTORS. WE SEARCH FOR THE LOST YOUNGER WARRIORS.

That's the way my Indian relations dressed me and told me to follow those ways.

I got in to straight dancing because thats what my grandfather did. My family was that ones that first dressed me in that style and I have never left it.

What I love the most about it is the grace and style of it all. Not to mention how good the dancers look when they hiot grand entry in their "sunday best" granted everyone looks good when they get to grand entry, but when the straight dancers hit the floor you get awestruck by the sheer majisty of the style and form. Ok so I am biased on the topic...LOL :D
We the unwilling, lead by the unknowing, have been doing so much with so little, for so long, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

So I'm new to this site. Saw someone last weekend at the Chickahominy powwow with a T-Shirt on and decided to check it out. It's pretty cool! There are a lot of knowledgable people on here. There are a few wackos on here too but I guess that's a topic for another thread.

Hello, everyone! It's been awhile since I posted anything to this forum, and usually in the N Trad venue then. I've been a N Trad dancer a long time, but I was recently invited by an elder to the Straight style. Because I was taught that I should view any requests by an elder as near-on to a requirement,...

There probably isn't a good place to post this so I thought I'd post the question here. The question originally came from a spectator and was asked of me probably 15 years ago. I didn't have a good answer then and I don't have one now.

Why do male dancers wear bells when they dance?...

                                Ok folks,
Long time ago I started out learning straight dancing. I learned a little, but got interested in North. Trad. because A) it seemed a little showier with younger people doing N. trad than Straight. B) the girls at the 49 went after the Trad. and Fancy dancers, not the straight. Stupid...
