The best suggestion is to go through the discussions here and it will help you decide where to start. You will find through these past conversations that there is a proper way to go about this. Good luck!

My first suggestion would be to study some of the southern plains tribal warrior society traditions that are said to be the origins of the modern Straight Dance style.

You might start by reading the thread titled "Ponca Hethuska Society" in this Straight Dancing forum by going to: http://www.powwows.com/gathering/showthread.php?t=29702

In addition, you might want to pick up a copy of the book titled The Osage Ceremonial Dance I'n-Lon-Schka by Alice A. Callahan, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, OK, 1990, ISBN: 0-8061-2284-6.

These two sources will start you in the right direction towards understanding what Straight Dancing is. Once you have that foundation, then you will be better prepared for the next step....to talk to some experienced Straight Dancers, preferably ones who hold positions in their tribal warrior/veteran society.

"Be good, be kind, help each other."
"Respect the ground, respect the drum, respect each other."

        --Abe Conklin, Ponca/Osage (1926-1995)

The two previous post have some great places to start. Especially Historians about finding a mentor. This I feel is most important for someone to show you the proper ettiquite of our dance. And last, BE PATIENT!! Sit back and watch and learn!! Remember just cuz you got the cloths doesn't always mean you're ready! Good Luck

Michael, let me clean my last reply up a bit. I didn't mean "You" when I said "just cuz you got the clothes.." Because I know you are just starting out. What I meant was that I see many people that put together an outfit and start dancing without doing the proper research! I wish I could type as fast as my brain thinks!!

I have many very good friends who are Shawnee. The Shawnee have some very nice traditional ribbonwork. As Historian has suggested as research talk to some of the Straight dancers in private, in person if possible. Not sure where you are living, I hope that you may have someone you canvisit with, then possibly sponsor you.
