I've participated in a couple of Pawnee Iruskas, and the drum placement was at the outside edge of the northeast octant of the dance circle. I was curious as to the reason. If this question is one that should not be dealt with on this public forum, I will understand.

During the Pawnee veterans dance, Skidi and Kitkahahki dances the man dance drum is placed in the center of the arbor or round house.Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable. -
Gledanh... must of been to a recent dance and seen this, he is correct. I did not attend, but reasons are not meant for internet discussion.
Regular Veteran's Dance the drum is in the center.

Just sitting here not googling anything, and wondering how the hethuska and like organizations have changed over the years. I see in Fletcher & LaFlesche that the drum used to be at the periphery of the dance circle, to the right of the door maybe 150 years ago. I was sharing some drum information with a friend yesterday.
I was telling him that I was taught not to come to the drum if you have bad feelings or don't like someone who is sitting at the drum. Because if you do, this negative energy will affect all the singers.
