  • White Head Handkerchief?

    _________

As a part of stately attire worn by the man dancers, a white head handkerchief is often included.

Is this sybolic of the old turbans worn by the man dance tribes?

Is it a fashion statement that is now traditional?

Or is it simply to keep the sweat from pouring down the face?

    Any idee-ers?

Depends on who you ask. I have hear from one NDN that it is only for members of the NAC. Another one told me it was for sweat and a third told me it was to keep your roach strings straight.

Never heard the turban correlation. Good one.

I think we use the white handkerchief because that is the thing I was taught to do. My Uncles, Dad, Cuz's, friends wore it. It does help keep the sweet from our eyes. It could be a STYLE thing.

I have seen this used by other Ilonshka dancers as well as my friends and family. Not all Ilonshka dancers do wear the handkerchief around thier head, though.

I heard it was started by a Ponca who put it on to keep the sweat out. Seeing this respected person with it on, prompted others to begin wearing it as a fashion statement.

I will get more info later. This supposedly happened in the 1940's.

I guess you can see that I like to get names, dates, tribes and locations. I kinda' like documentation. Can you tell?

As for the Headband I don't know where it came from. I was taught to wear it I assume it's for keeping sweat from your eyes.

                    Kool Aid

Kool Aid is bad for the teeth. Makes your teeth fall out in time.
                    Stick with water.

As for the white headkerchief; what is the deal?

As for the deal. I think it's been answered. It's a decorative but practical piece. I could be wrong, but nobody has spoke up yet.

We can't be a warrior and a gentleman?

I thought I was Commissioned in the Army as an Officer AND a Gentleman. I understand this is no longer the case though, thanks to Pres. Carter.

                                by WhoMe
I have been to powwows where there are head dancers who aren't friendly, look mean or bored, publically gripe, show up late, don't get out to dance every dance and didn't show up at all for an entire session.

What are some expectations of good head man and head woman dancers?

I have a deer skin with Chief Red Eagle painted on it. It is very old it was my grandfathers and I inherited it. I'm not sure of the age of the painting. If my grandfather was alive today he would be 112 years old. It needs to be put on a wood branch frame and stretched. I live near LeRoy, IL where...
