Glad to see you "keepin' it real".

Just out of curiousity, do you have family in Macy Nebraska? You want to start there before you come searching on the internet. You never know what you'll get.

                    How to sneak up

Step 1. Take off your bells and feather.
Step 2. Make sure the lady runnin the fry bread stand is real busy or talkin with her niece that just had a baby.
Step 3. Use some papertowels to grab the frybread so you dont burn your hand,
Step 4. Run, and hope you are faster than her sons.....
                    LOL J/k

                    Seriously,
I been trying to figure out how we're supposed to sneakup for four years and still say we ain't supposed to be doin' it. Its annoying to say the least, but so often when you get North of the sanity line there usually aren't enough straight dancers to make a category so they just lump us in with the northern tradish. (Most contest in the great lakes don't even list straight as a category).

If it ain't the contest song I sit down. I have had one person come after me with "This is the song for the men's traditional, you should be out there" I then had to explain to them that they are Northern tradish, I am Southern, and the only thing I am sneaking up on is an Indian taco or a snag.

I have had this happen twice when I was head dancer- one time I knew ahead of time and just stepped out and waved a buddy of mine that dances Northern in to cover (made a great excuse to get somethin to drink). The other time I kinda got stuck out there- it upset me, upset the Northern dancers, and was real real funny to my wife and her friends.

What's worse, the one time I have seen a southern contest in this area they only had one straight dancer in regalia, so they asked all the traditional guys to take off their bustles and participate (upset me on multiple levels).

I've never been to Hunting Moon cause I am other wise engaged on that weekend (first weekend in November is busy enit?) so I can't speak for that event, but these are general observations of this area.
However there is at least one drum from this area that should be there that knows straight songs (even though they are Northern).

What has been your experience contesting at a powwow where your dance style was definitely in the minority? Have you ever been the only Southern dancer in a field of Northern contestants, or vice versa?...

For those straight dancers in Oklahoma who only straight dance in Oklahoma this is not an issue. But for any straight dancer who contests outside of Oklahoma, more than likely the straight dancers had to dance with and against Northern traditional dancers.

                        When this happens what are...

Here in Utah we have less than a handful of straight dancers. Usually only one will be in attendance at a powwow and will be group in with all the Northern traditional dancers.

This weekend a "duck and dive" song was the second song. The straight dancer danced it very "straight"...

I was wondering if there is a group of folks or someone who would be willing to teach me to dance Straight. I'm from Wisconsin and we don't really have that way up here.

I'm more than likely going to school in either Oklahoma, Arizona or New Mexico. It is my hope to find some people who...
