How would you describe "Southern Straight?"

A freind of mine was asking me what southern straight dancing was like. We are northern plains, and the best I could explain to her is "They kinda dance soft" ...she got a kick out of that, but it didn't help explain what it was like. Any suggestions?

The straight dance comes from the "man dance ceremonies" of the Ponca, Osage, Otoe-Missouria, Pawnee, Quapaw, Kaw and Comanche.

It is hard to give a definite description of the straight dance because not only do different tribes have a certain way of dancing, but individuals also have their own style.

There is not a "catch all" way to describe the straight dance.

The Straight dance is smooth, in step with the drum/song. No bustle, or at least very rarely. There is such a thing as a Helushka bustle, though rarely worn anymore. At least at our Inlonshkas.

This is a Mans dance. Ceremonial, Societal, and personal to the dancer. Although we may have different personal dance moves, we dance very much the same/similar.
