My opinion...I don't think it's cool to bash people on an anonymous public forum. You probably should have taken all this up with them if you had such a problem with it. That's my opinion.
I think everyone on this rez is addicted to Harry Potter...lol...

      I agree with ^Wojapi^

I've met Eagle Flight before and even had dinner with them after Skydome one year many years ago, there was a whole bunch of us. They're very nice and not disrespectful at all.

I think you should let it go. You made your own points about why you should. And I agree with them.

It's rare for someone to try to hop into a host drum. I don't see it very much. And usually the person is invited by the lead singer. I'm not saying you are a nobody. But lead singers usually invite people like Randy Paskimin or Hopie Day or in this case someone from the cozad family to sit during a cozad song.

Concerning the points....I guess the Head judge took care of it. I have seen some powwows that go the other way. Either sing or dance!

Oh yeah....But I have seen some drum group and singers act "somehow"...

All it made me feel is sorry for the them, because they are either getting too high headed or they are just rude people anyway. I usually just file it away and sit nearer a more friendly drum. But I still enjoy the awesome singing of ANY drum.

Its just like that sometimes, but its not only singers. Glad to say there are more without the funky egos than with them.

I try to remind myself that some dancers that appear to be "stuck up" (for lack of a better term) are really just shy people and don't mean to be "somehow"

Plus some people just have that "look." Soooooo people think the worst, I have had those comments a few times, "dang, you are kind of cool, thought you was mean by looking at you." Mistake my "hungry" face for something stuck-up....lol

And I have done it, too. I will admit it. Thought...."ugh....what is wrong with so and so." Then hung out and not so bad afterall....(Miss Shayz).....kidding!!!!!...lol

I have been going there for the past 3-4 years and always enjoy myself that's why our drum always continues to return every year.. Well The Host Drum was Eagle Flight ...There singing was good but their attitude was really Nasty.. i know they are from Canada but does that give the right to Treat the other singers like Trash.. first of all i know it says in the Rules when your register your drum "no drum Hopping" I have attended Numerous pows wows and sang with great drums along the way .. and at those pow wows the rules state no drum hopping.. clearly no one really listens to the rule..

so when eagle flight decided to sing a Southern song (they are a northern Drum ) me as having a love for southern Music i decided i would like to share in the moment and sing this beautiful cozad song with them.. as always i approached the drum and asked for permission from their lead singer and said no and the other individual there singing proceeded to tell me 'no Drum hopping" so i took it in stride and embarrassment at the same time part of me felt disrespected but i just told myself its in the rules just let it go ..so i continued to proceed through the rest of my day..

when it came to our final contest song is would be a Mens fancy ruffle .. we had talked to the pow wow committee and Arena Director and Made them Aware that we had a singer dancing and for the judges not to deduct points .. Well The Drum judges were several singers from the Host Drum Eagle Flight.. so when the judges came over we told them that one of our singers were dancing and not to deduct points .. i was Advised "well its either sing or dance" So Now i really feel disrespected by these guys..

we sang our song and they judged us.. after i approached the head judge and told him and he said they didn't deduct points i told them not to.. i told the Head Judge Wat was said to me and Made Them come back up and they had to change their scores.. So i know i should just be happy they changed their score but i think its really disrespectful that after we told them they still continued to deduct points..

i wanna know what other pow wow people think of this situation .. I mean they are a good drum but they arent Northern Cree ,Midnite express Young Bird.. I mean i know they didnt kknow who i was but i have sang with Young bird ,Southern Boyz, Mystic River ,, Its not like i was just a boyscout at the pow wow,.. well i ant your opinions get back at me
I agree not cool to bash someone on a forum site like this - without them being able to give their side of the story.

I know a couple of the young men that sing with Eagle Flight (their father lives down the hill from me actually.) I have always known them to be respectful young men. Now i can't say that of all the members of the group because I do not know them.

But I do know that all drum groups are different and some do not allow anyone to sit down with them at any time for any reason. Just the singers that sing with them. Meanwhile others are ... the more the merrier.

I do think it is their perogative not to allow someone to sit down with them, mid song. As I would imagine happened, since they started singing the song already (you heard them singing the Cozad song). It is a big of inconvenience, everyone trying to move over to make room for another singer, trying to keep the beat and song straight. That could be considered rude on your part to attempt to join a drum when they are already singing.

It is also the job of the head drum and dancing judges to notify their judges of the rules they are using. And often some pow wows have rules about it is either dance or sing. That is sometimes a big decision to make for some people ... sing or dance. As far as those judges knew, maybe they were told, it is either sing or dance. And the head judge made the exception for you (and your drum) and failed to notify all or some of judges they picked.

1st of all its OPIE Day.....jk....and even to be named in the same sentence as randy "the one" paskimin is a honor.....but back to the subject....i know the Eagle Flight boys personally and have never known them to be rude or disrespectful....and i do know they are a mainly a family drum....but you also have to understand that different groups have different rules n protocol that belong to their drum....maybe if you woulda told them about how you were "feelin'" the Cozad song they woulda understood and noone would have ill feelings....as for the judging part i know sometimes the head judge will give directions or things to look for to their judges, but i wasnt there and do not know if that was the case....I do know that the Nicotine boys are good singers and prolly didnt mean to upset you so....I also do believe you coulda talked to them in person instead of disrespecting the whole group on an anonymous website like this for all to see

                              On behalf of my drum...

I rarely come on here, usually just check out pow wow information and threads but I had to respond to respond to this fool's thread that he has started, it's obvious that he has alot to learn about pow wows, southern style singing and respect for others. To all those including family, fellow singers, etc...thank you for standing up for us thus far even though I/Eagle Flight hasn't been on here to see this until now! hi-hi, chi-meegwetch!

To the person who started this thread, YOUR right, I don't know who you are. So why do you think it's OK to come on a PUBLIC POW WOW sight to bash my drum and our reputation without knowing me or my group? To me, you sound like your upset because your "wanna-be" southern group didn't place in the drum contest or because I'm about to call you on your whiney BS! This is what I'll make clear not to justify anything but to make clear that I/Eagle Flight doesn't put up with anybody's disrespect, especially if they are just assuming. We are not "BIG TIME" in the pow wow world but have earned the respect/friendship of most of the big time drum groups and singers over the past 20 years or so. We've been taught to be very humble as singers and learned more from those who have been the same way around their drums.

-Was this drum contest important to your or not? It was a small prize board and the rules stated "No drum hopping". For your own protection of points, you were turned away because we did not finish judging yet. YOU DID try to slide in a chair after half a verse, YOU DID NOT ask to sit down and YOU DID not know us. Wether the song was Cozad or not, I learned if from R.G. Harris of Rose Hill back when I sang with him in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1992/93 along with the Haystack Singers. My group and I only sing our songs or songs that we've been given permission to sing over the years.

-Without additional honourarium, we agreed to run this drum contest for Dartmouth College. We made a simple yet fair ballot and we DID not deduct points from your drum for that dancer you had singing. After you were done singing that song though, another one was requested from you lack of experience for the song requested. It would purely be your dancer's choice where to get his point as well. Sing or Dance?

I too have sung with the best of them at one time or another. Besides learning and singing with my dad, my highest and most memorable honor was being able to sing/talk with the late great Billy Baker of Mandaree. Sang with the likes of Opie Day and he has sat with us too, Terry Paskemin, Algin Scabbyrobe, Danny Seaboy, Seymore Eagle Speaker, Ted and Ron Noon, Bear Creek Boys, Whitetail Cree, Haystack, Mandaree past/present, Mystic River past/present and alot of other great people in pow wow country.

My name is Vydel Nicotine Sands and I don't think I've ever personally offended you because I never met you, just seen you at this pow wow. Now you know me and it be much appreciated if you kept your "sour grapes" attitude to yourself or man up and talk to me in person next time. You've just embarresed yourself on here and I am very much about protecting my family and drum group. You are very lucky, other singers would not be as nice as this because you would get *****-slapped. I've learned alot of things the hard way myself with singing when I was younger but it has taught me to be respectful and to not put up with dis-respect.

                              Sincerely,
                              VYDEL N. SANDS
                              EAGLE FLIGHT SINGERS
