  • Singing Style/Technique?

I have a question that I'm not even sure how to ask. I often see singers doing something with their throat while singing. They sometimes hold their throat (trachea?) with their hand while singing. I'm not sure how else to describe it, so I hope y'all know what I'm talking about. What are they doing by holding their throat?

Well here's tha thing...Pinching is okay and it does get your voice high, especially when you're doing war cries, and as long as long you don't do anything to damage youer voice like smoke or drink, you can pinch for a while but it won't be a problem...but if you continue pinching for too long, for years even, it'll strain your vocal chords & it will damage your voice. I've seen several guys who pinched who had crisp sky-high voices a few years ago, but their voices have gotten damaged. I won't name names but i have seen it happen. Just sing naturally and in time you'll have a keen singing voice.
Mama said don't play w/ matches...she never said anything about lighters ;)

Thanks for the explanation. That's kinda what I figured, since I've noticed it more with northern singers.

I saw YBH here at the Austin powwow a couple years ago. Good job!

I believe blood quantums are the governments way to breed us out of existance !

They say blood is thicker than water ! Now maple syrup is thicker than blood , so are pancakes more important than family ?

There are "Elders" and there are "Olders". Being the second one doesn't make the first one true !

Somebody is out there somewhere, thinking of you and the impact you made in their life.
          It's not me....I think you're an idiot !

Y'all ever get down to the Austin powwow anymore? Northern tradish is one of my favs. I don't think I've ever seen you dance, though. I think I would've recognized your regalia/face paint.

Dang , I was front page of the paper 2 years in a row ! LOL I love the dance , and I love to dance ! Years of smoking and poor judgement have taken their toll though. I haven't dressed out in a couple years , got fat and lazy ! Last time I tried I ran out of air pretty quick and didn't do so well. I still gourd dance but I think my "Tradish" days are over. My brain says I can , my heart and lungs say no way !

Hmmm. Then I probably have seen you. I joined pws.com in 2008 (although I lurked for quite awhile before that), so I might not have seen your avatar/pics on here yet.

I couldn't go this year 'cause I'm still in mourning for my mom, but I'm usually there every year. One year I met Nancy Jo, 2line and Sunktaki and her husband (can't remember his name). That was cool.

I've been to the powwow here so often I recognize people (or regalia) that I've never met. Last year I was sitting in the stands with some friends and found myself saying things like: "That young chicken dancer over there, he's had a big growth spurt since last year; Look at that little boy tradish dancer, this is the first year he's been able to come out with the men during grand entry, I'll bet he's so proud, he's always had to come in holding his mama's hand before now. "

I've been so often, I keep thinking I should contact the people at Great Promise to see about volunteering.

                    Pinching while singing

Can someone describe where to pinch when singing high notes? Any videos showing how? How do cree singers sing so high?

So that's why I have also seen some people doing that!

hey, what is a good exercise to be a good 2nd after a lead. does it need to be louder than the lead? does it need to be higher? on cd, the lead is louder than the 2nd. i think that is because of the mic is closer to the lead singer. i use to try and sing loud, but now i try to match everybody else pitch...

I recently ran across a post from Sirdaddy where he commented on how quite a few southern singers are taking their leads way up there nowadays. I'm not calling any names, I think we all know someone who is guilty of this if not you yourself. I know I am.

At any rate, I've listened to...

Well, I've noticed this happening to me as of late and I'm not too sure why. The singing itself is stronger, but I just can't hit too many high notes nor hold them for too long. Do you other "seasoned" singers out there see this as a thing of "maturation" or maybe there are other...
